The game started in what appears to be a
customary style for Neath, outside half Lee Jarvis on target with a penalty
kick in the opening minute. Two minutes later a lateral kick by Eric Elwood was
pounced on by Connacht left wing Wayne Munn, Elwood converted. Elwood attempted
a penalty after Neath were adjudged offside. Elwood was off target with the
kick, second row Mark McConnell followed up, caught the ball and dived over for
a try, the conversion was charged down by the Neath players.
Neath
fullback Shaun Connor took advantage of a huge overlap to score a try under the
posts, Jarvis added the extra points for the conversion. Connachts third try
came at the end of the half when Ireland U21 wing Johnny O'Connor crossed under
the posts, Elwood was on target with the conversion.
Much of the second
half was spent deep in the Connacht half, but not even a series of six
successive scrums on the home line could yield any points. The home team scored
two penalties in the second period; Elwood was on target on both occasions.
