NEATH RUGBY NEEDS YOU
AT OUR
NEXT HOME GAME
PLYMOUTH ALBION - Sat. 20th Aug., 7.30pm

Neath Rugby play London Welsh at The Gnoll on Saturday August 13th, kick off is at 7.30pm
The match will be a regulation 40 minutes each way but with unlimited substitutions It is planned that all available squad players will take the field at some time during the match

Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "London Welsh are a fantastic club and we are excited about welcoming such a historic club to the Gnoll. They continue to be a competitive side with a strong Neath connection in their Director of Rugby, Adrian Davies. The heartbeat of the London Welsh club is their General Manager Ron Holley, who is someone I have huge respect for from my time at the club. I have fond memories of my time at London Welsh as a player, and I am particularly looking forward to Saturdays fixture. I am sure it will provide us with a great curtain raiser on what I hope will be another successful season for Neath Rugby"

TRIBUTE - JOHN THORLEY
Former Neath prop John Thorley has passed away suddenly at the age of 78 in his adopted northern home of Halifax.

Mountain Ash product John Thorley joined Neath in 1949 and soon made an impression in the powerful Neath eight of the time. A Glamorgan County player and Welsh trialist, he was surely destined for senior honours but opted instead to follow another outstanding Neath prop of that era Les Anthony, the Welsh international, north.

On joining Halifax RL, John quickly established himself in the hard school of northern forward play. He appeared 261 times in nine seasons for Halifax, scoring 7 tries and broke the club record for most consecutive appearances as well as playing a record 48 games in 1956/57. His record earned him a place in the Halifax RL "Hall of Fame".

Probably the highlight of his club career in League was when he played in the 1954 Challenge Cup final replay against Warrington - a match that attracted a crowd estimated at 100,000. He finished his career with Dewsbury, playing his final game appropriately at Thrum Hall against Halifax.

He won RL honours for Wales and played for Great Britain in the first ever Rugby League World Cup final against France in Paris in 1954.

New Signing
Neath Rugby are pleased to confirm the signing of Wales International outside half Arwel Thomas on a two year contract

Arwel is 29 years old, has 23 Wales appearances (216 points including 12 tries) and rejoins the Welsh All Blacks from the Llanelli Scarlets

Arwel started his playing career at Neath RFC, scoring over 200 points in the 1994/ 95 season. In that season he played in the clubs famous fixture against South Africa, showing up well in a young Neath back division which also featured Rhodri Jones and Lee Davies (he scored 8 points in a the hard fought match which eventually saw Neath lose by 18-13)

Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips:
"I am thrilled to have Arwel returning to the Gnoll and it is great to see quality players wanting to play for Neath. As a club we want to continue to be successful whilst developing young players and having experience in key positions can only help with this process. Arwel has now been training with us for a few weeks and he has slotted straight back into the way we do things. We are looking for flexibility throughout our squad and signing Arwel gives us options behind the scrum as he can play in a number of positions"

"James Hook did a fine job for us last season, but I am conscious that due to the number of games he played we did not have a great deal of time to work with him on his conditioning and on the all-round development of his game. We needed to free up more time off the pitch if we are to help James realise his undoubted potential and signing Arwel will help achieve this objective"

Comment from Arwel Thomas:
''I enjoyed my spell with Neath at the start of my career and I'm looking forward to returning to the club. Playing semi-professional rugby is ideal for me at this time in my career. Hopefully, I will get a job outside rugby and this will give my family more stability. There were other enquiries about my availability to play as a professional, but it was just a year here or there. With Neath having such a good set-up I was pleased to be able to return to the club. I know they have an up-and-coming fly-half in James Hook but I'm sure there'll be opportunities for us both''

WALES UNDER-21's IN ARGENTINA
After winning the Welsh Premiership, most of the Neath squad took a well-deserved rest but for six of the squad the rugby action continued as they set out for the Argentine and the Under 21's World Cup campaign.

For Wales, the tournament ultimately ended in disappointment, with a return of just one victory from five games and an eighth place finish in the competition. The junior Grand Slammers managed a solitary victory over Scotland in the pool stages where they lost to New Zealand and Argentina. Further defeats followed against Scotland and England in the play off stages.

But the squad's prospects were not enhanced prior to departure when Chris Czekaj (Cardiff) and Matthew Jones (Neath) were upgraded to the senior squad and Ian Evans (Neath) was left at home to concentrate on his conditioning. Pontypridd's Duane Goodfield and Tom Riley were injured so it was rather an understrength squad that set out.

As ever, Neath made a significant contribution to the Wales Under-21's cause. Aled Brew added to his try tally as did centre Andrew Bishop who has been given an Ospreys contract next year. The overlooking of Wales' top points scorer James Hook was a mystery to Neath fans - 466 points including a dozen tries ought to have merited selection for the rising No.10 but maybe he displayed such maturity in 2004/05 that the selectors did not realise he is of such tender years !

Up front, prop Cai Griffiths will have gained more valuable experience in the front row but flanker Tom Smith was sent off against New Zealand and sat out the remainder of the tournament.

Neath's new hooker Gerwyn Price (who impressed Brian Thomas and several other sound judges with his display for Cross Keys at The Gnoll in a 10-89 defeat last year) went as second hooker to UWIC's Rhys James and won his first cap. Then an injury to Newport-bound James saw Ed Shervington earn a dramatic call-up and he too earned his cap in the England game.

A crowd of 30,000 witnessed the final between South Africa and Australia in Buenos Aires and this indicates the high profile which the Under-21's World Cup enjoyed. Beaten they may have been but valuable exposure at a high level will benefit Neath and Wales in the future.

Only Cai Griffiths is too old for Under-21's next season when Aled Bevan, James Hook, AlunWyn Davies and James Davies are all eligible. With key members of the Under-19's like Jonathan Spratt, Martin Roberts and Craig Mitchell ready to push through, the Blacks are likely to be well represented at Wales Under-21's level again in 2005/06.

MARTYN DAVIES
The death has occurred of one of Neath rugby's favourite sons, Martyn Davies who died while on a walking holiday in the French Alps.

Martyn Davies holds a very special place in Welsh rugby history because he was captain of Neath in the club's centenary year of 1971/72 and it was he who became the first captain to hold aloft the Welsh Cup and to then carry it on its now customary "lap of honour" around the old Cardiff Arms Park.

Martyn played locally for BP Llandarcy, Neath Athletic and Tonna but, having debuted for Neath in 1963, he will forever be associated with the Welsh All Blacks for whom he went on to make a Club record 511 appearances up to his retirement in 1977.

He was a member of the Neath side that won the Snelling Sevens for the first time in 1964 and shared the scrum-half role with his great mate Dai Parker during Neath's Welsh championship success in 1966/67. He captained Neath for four seasons with that inaugural Cup win was probably the highlight of his career.

Along with scrum-halves of the calibre of Glyn Turner (Ebbw Vale) and Selwyn Williams (Llanelli), Martyn had to be content with a Wales 'B' cap because his career had the misfortune to coincide with that of the great Gareth Edwards whose prowess was such that Ray Hopkins (Maesteg) and Clive Shell (Aberavon) won but a single cap each.

But Martyn was an extremely astute tactician and as brave a scrum-half as there was. Memories of Martyn's dive-pass and the sight of him wagging his finger at the big All Black forwards in front of him will live for ever.

After his playing days, Martyn put his wealth of experience to immediate use by becoming Neath's coach and he served on the Club's Management Committee as well.

His influence extended beyond Neath too as he was an executive member of WRU District 'D' and he then became coach of the Welsh Youth team that progressed so many players to senior international honours.

Very much an all-round sportsman, Martyn was also a very agile wicketkeeper for both Neath and Ynysygerwn Cricket Clubs.

Outside sport, Martyn started work as a wages clerk with the old Neath Borough Council before working for a time at BP Llandarcy. He then undertook teacher training at Cardiff Training College (now UWIC) and enjoyed a very successful career becoming headmaster at Blaenhonddan Junior School in Bryncoch and he was then involved in education administration.

Last season, he was a regular visitor to The Gnoll as he maintained a watchful eye on the development of some of the younger All Blacks talents. He was as delighted as anyone by the All Blacks' success in carrying off the Welsh title for the 12th time and was most concerned that Neath should make it 13 in 2005/06.

The Neath club will not be the same without Martyn Davies who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

ALL BLACKS AT THE GNOLL NEXT SEASON
According to the Amawanga Herald, New Zealand, the All Blacks will return to The Gnoll next season to play Neath as part of their Grand Slam Tour. The All Blacks last played at The Gnoll in 1989 when they were given the toughest task of their short tour by the Welsh All Blacks. The match is scheduled for Saturday 31st September 2005 (5.10pm KO - due to television coverage). Advance details of ticket availablity and prices will be announced shortly.

Coach Graham Henry is reported as desiring a "warm up" game prior to the Test against Wales and NZ sources suggest that Neath, as Welsh Cup holders and Premier champions in waiting, have been afforded the honour. Neath chairman Geraint Hawkes said, "We have not heard anything concrete at this stage but I will be pressing NZ to wear white this time as we changed last time."

Replacements: 16 Craig Mitchell 17 Ed Shervington 18 Paul Jones 19 Ben Davies 20 John McPhail 21 Mark Davies 22 Neil Clapham

Comment from Assistant Coach, Patrick Horgan:
"We played poorly at Stradey earlier in the season but probably still should have won the match, even though we had only fourteen men on the park for most of the game. It will again be difficult tomorrow evening due to unavailability of players but the squad has been performing well over recent weeks and we go into the game in a confident frame of mind. We will be looking to reverse the result in front of what I am sure will be a vocal and supportive home crowd"

Injury and availability news
We currently have nine players unavailable: - Adam Matthews (knee) will be out of action for the remainder of this season Patrick Horgan is out of action due to thigh strain Wayne Mitchell is unavailable due to personal commitments Andrew Llewellyn has a broken hand and will be out for another week Tom Smith, Andrew Bishop, Aled Brew, Ian Evans and Cai Griffiths are unavailable due to Wales Under-21's commitments

Comment from Assistant Coach, Patrick Horgan:
"Pontypridd are a much improved outfit over recent months. Over the last year we have played them three times, and on each occasion it has been a tough match. We are expecting more of the same on Saturday. Our confidence has been a bit low over recent weeks and we have not been playing well, although our preparations have been hampered by international call-ups for our Under-21's. Our squad will be tested over the next few weeks with a number of taxing fixtures and we will need to be on top of our game if we are to get the results we need to maintain our league position "

Wales Under 18 take on Italy in inaugural match
Hugh Gustafson will captain the Wales Under 18 side when they take on Italy Under 18 at the Gnoll next Thursday, 6 January (7pm).

The Scarlets, Ysgol Tre-gib and Llandeilo prop has earned the honour through a display of outstanding leadership qualities which have taken the Scarlets Under 18 side to the top of the table in the WRU Reebok Regional Championship.

Kevin George, Wales Under 18 head coach said, "Hugh has proved himself to be a very strong, dynamic leader and will captain the side from loosehead prop."

This will be the first match for the Wales Under 18 side since the WRU took over the running of the age group at international level in September. The players involved would in the past have played for Wales Schools Under 18 or Wales Youth.

Ten Dragons players are included in the 22 for next Thursday's encounter. Rhys Jones and Robert Lewis form a Gwent partnership at halfback while Ashley Smith and Jimmy Norris also form part of the back line. Jamie Corsi, Ben Flower and Lewis Evans feature in the pack while Gwesyn Price-Jones, Adam Brown and Gareth Maule will start on the bench. Also in the starting line-up are Will Harries and Bryn Jenkins who came through the Dragons' Regional Identification Process at the start of the season as Exiles before returning to their schools in England.

George added, "Competition for places in the team has been stiff, especially for the centre partnership. We have selected a very powerful yet mobile pack and have a mature half-back partnership in Rhys Jones and Robert Lewis which we hope will develop further throughout the season.

"Selection for the national side is largely based on performance in the WRU Reebok Regional Championship as it provides a bridge between school and youth club rugby and international rugby which allows us to observe players playing against the best players in Wales.

"We will be reviewing the national squad after the Italy game based on Regional performances - players who have put in excellent performances at regional level may be called in just as we will look again at players whose regional rugby has not been hitting form. The competition has proved a true breeding ground for the development of these players, both in terms of technical ability and match fitness at a competitive level.

"We are all looking forward to this game - it is the first game at this level for this set of players and management alike. We are very happy with our preparations for the game and have been hugely impressed with the attitude and skills levels of the players particularly during this Christmas period."

Former WRU director of rugby Terry Cobner is team manager of the Wales U18 team, with a coaching team headed up by Llanelli Academy manager Kevin George. Ian Gardner and Paul John are George's assistant coaches while Wayne Jones is an attached coach and Rob Shottle is the coaching co-ordinator.

WALES U18 v ITALY U18 (Thursday 6 January, 7pm, The Gnoll)

"EMPTY VESSELS MAKE MOST NOISE" …… WHAT DID HE MEAN ?

Neath supporters who watch Scrum V in the vain hope of seeing a rare clip of the All Blacks in action were astounded to hear former Wales scrum-half Robert Jones exclaim after our splendid win over Newport that "Neath's experience" will raise questions. So does Jones' jealous jingoism stand up ? Not at all, we say.

Now for some reason Scrum V is not exactly the all-singing, all-dancing promotional preserve of the Premier. And to be fair, its presenters don't pretend to have any depth of knowledge when it comes to affairs sub-regional. But surely there was no need for Robert to hint in such a sinister manner that there might be something wrong?

Was Robert perhaps suggesting that Neath had players who were ineligible ? Let's get one thing straight for a start. Every Neath team that takes to the field abides fully by all Premier Division rules defined by the WRU. No breaking quotas of regional players for us - not this year, nor last when the activities of one or two famous clubs threw the relegation battle into confusion bordering on disrepute.

Or was Robert perhaps questioning the age of our team ? The admirable Nick Webb's voiceover made much of Andrew Howell being 39. But we know that the "Hungry House" ranks among the finest props in this Division, his know-how is inestimable, his presence invaluable - besides, in this era of "political correctness" ageism is frowned upon. Besides, selection is up to us - not the BBC.

Questioning our "experience" merely highlighted the programme's lack of depth when it comes to the WPD. If, by "experience" Robert means years spent at Premier level, then a little hard research would have proved to him that the Blacks are by no means the most "experienced" team in the Division. We are not as raw as say Cardiff but what we have got is a subtle blend of experience and youth in the squad.

Against Newport we started with 5 Under-21's, had another 4 on the bench, Lee Beach was 22 in October and Andrew Bishop would have played had he been fit. In fact, Newport were more "experienced" than Neath - they had but 2 Under-21's and one on the bench (and lost). On that same day, Swansea and Llanelli fielded 4 Under-21's (less than Neath) and lost at Aberavon and Bedwas. "Inanity in the UK" - as the Sex Pistols might say !

The corollary of Robert's off-target remark is that we are not developing. That, of course, is a gross travesty and a glance at the Wales Under-21's side reveals that Neath supplied more players than anyone else. Indeed, I would venture that Neath - more than any other Premier Club - has consistently over the years developed more players than anyone else. But we won't let the younger members of our squad take Scrum V to heart - as Brian Thomas always says, "We must be doing things right if everyone else is complaining."

I like to think that it was just the case that Graham Thomas caught poor Robert on the hop and he was stumped for an answer. But if that was so, then he should have done what my old Latin master (oddly enough, a big Swansea RFC supporter) always used to advise : "Before opening mouth, engage brain !" Oh, and a little attention to facts would not go amiss either - we at Neath are developing and winning, our twin objectives are not mutually exclusive. Moreover, Neath's contribution to The Ospreys (and, for that matter, The Dragons) is immense. At the end of the day, the League is important and tables don't lie !

Neath's invincible ground record was maintained when Rowland Phillips and Mike Price, assisted by team captain Jason Mohammed of BBC, won their tie in the above. The programme is scheduled to be broadcast next month - but some of the "asides" will find themselves wiped from the tape !

24 and Rising !
Not the temperature but the number of Wales internationals that have played in the WPD this season. The full list is :- Mark Jones, Rhys Oakley, Chris Stephens, Justin Thomas, Ben Evans, Rob Appleyard, Mark Jones, Robin McBryde, Paul Arnold, Byron Hayward, Arwel Thomas, John Davies, Neil Boobyer, Mike Phillips, Chris Wyatt, Ryan Powell, Huw Bennett, Mefin Davies, Jon Bryant, Luke Charteris, Paul Young, Paul John, Dale McIntosh and Paul James. With 11 other capped players appearing too, it seems we have a decent enough product !

NOSTALGIA PIECE THE CLASS OF '84
Christmas is a time for nostalgia and, as we embark on what will hopefully be another successful Cup crusade, it is perhaps fitting to turn back the clock some 21 years to 1983/84. It was a pivotal campaign for Neath as it was the season when the Blacks emerged from the twilight years to reach the Cup Final for the first time in 12 seasons.

The 1983/84 Cup Final itself was reviewed in full in the Cardiff programme back in September. Without revisiting that article about that memorable day, the following XV restored Neath's pride in a battling 19-24 defeat :-

Neale Harris; Elgan Rees (captain), Keeron Jones, David Jacob, Carl Bridgewater; Jonathan Davies, Gareth Jones; Brian Williams, Mike Richards, Phil Langford; Huw Richards, Steve Dando; Gazzie Jones, David Morgan, Lyn Jones

But 1983/84 was such a key season for Neath that it is worth recording those other regular squad players (with appearances in brackets) who contributed so much to the year when Neath re-emerged.

Probably the unluckiest man to miss out was utility player Steve Powell as the local milkman had played in some 41 games that season. Steve went on to appear in virtually every position for the Blacks and only retired as player-coach of Bryncoch last year. Neath Athletic back rower Alun Hopkins (30) and Tenby United's Welsh Youth outside-half Ben Childs (25) were next in the line of regular contributors.

Long-serving lock Robert Hughes (21) had a leg-injury and, having first played for Neath in 1971/72, was especially sad to miss out after serving Neath so loyally - a Cup Final appearance would have been a fitting highlight to his Gnoll days ! Tonna hooker Paul Hitchings (painter, decorator and doorman) and Cwmavon lock Jonathan Willis made the same number of appearances.

Scrum-half Carl Gnojek (19) just missed out on selection to Lloyd Lewis Award winner "Sparky" Jones while that dynamic tackler Phil Pugh (18) was another on the injured list. Current Neath Athletic coach lock Andrew Vaughan (17), now teaching at Cymmer Afan, and Skewen back rower David Glover (14), a paramedic, also made significant contributions. Prop Doug Mills (10) advanced his Neath appearances total to 134 before returning to the Athletic when Brian Williams arrived - Doug's son Jonathan is now with the Scarlets, played for Llandovery against Neath and captained Wales Under-21's to victory against New Zealand last month.

A further 35 players made single-figure appearances as Neath registered a total of 31 wins and 2 draws in 52 games. Pride had largely been restored the previous year when the Blacks beat Aberavon in the Cup before bowing out at Bridgend in the quarter-finals. In 1983/84, Neath's resolute pack was taken to greater heights by the arrival of Brian Williams and Lyn Jones whose mobility took them closer to the concept of "Total rugby" that coaches Ron Waldron and Glen Ball under Team Manager Brian Thomas were beginning to develop.

The Blacks already had the prodigious goalkicking of Neale Harris (a little off-key in the final) and the incomparable finishing power of Elgan Rees and the missing piece in the jigsaw came in the Cup quarter-final when Jonathan Davies returned from injury to inspire a win over Newport. But all the "Class of 84" deserve a special place in Neath history for it was their combined efforts that helped re-launch the Welsh All Blacks on their path to total domination of the Welsh club rugby scene for the next decade and beyond.

CLUB AND TOWN UNITE FOR NEATH'S BIG RUGBY DAY
Club and Town will be in harmony on Saturday (27th) when the All Blacks of Neath entertain Newport at The Gnoll in Welsh rugby's match of the day.

Neath are pulling out all the stops for the clash that pits last year's League champions against the Cup holders and the whole Town is gearing up for what promises to be a massive occasion.

The fun kicks off at 1.00pm with a special Ladies match between Neath Athletic and Newport and pre-match entertainment includes face painting, juggling, stilt walkers, balloon modelling and musical entertainment.

At halftime, Santa Claus will be making his debut on the hallowed turf of The Gnoll and Walkers have sponsored free pop and Monster Munch crisps for kids.

The Blacks have implemented a new scheme whereby shoppers can collect vouchers from town outlets that entitle them to discounts on tickets bought via the Club Shop up until Thursday.

So far, over 20 outlets (see Appendix) have signed up to the scheme as Club and Town unite in the All Black cause.

The match is being sponsored by Neath Port Talbot Council whose leader, Councillor Derek Vaughan said, "We involve ourselves in the community through this sponsorship because sport reflects many of the Council's aims whether it be through physical activity to improve health, spectator support, attracting visitors or stimulating economic interest and prosperity."

"We are very proud of the Neath Club and its achievements and I was fortunate to be present at the Millennium Stadium last May when Neath won the Cup and we are delighted to sponsor such a high-profile occasion."

Neath Town Centre Manager Andrew Shufflebotham welcomed the development and said, "Rugby has always been a big part of Neath. Neath is Wales' oldest senior club and the Welsh Rugby Union itself was founded here. It is good to see the traders of the Town and the Club working together for their mutual benefit."

NEATH CHAIRMAN SLAMS TV ABSENCE
Neath Rugby chairman Geraint Hawkes has condemned television for shunning Saturday's big Welsh Premier Division shoot out between the All Blacks and Newport.

The clash between Cup holders Neath and Newport (the reigning League champions) will have a significant bearing on the destiny of this year's Premier title and the All Blacks are aggrieved that the game will not be available to a wider audience.

"We are anticipating the biggest club gate of the season," says Hawkes, "and there is no doubt that this game has far more significance to the Welsh rugby public in general than do the mid-table regional games being staged at the weekend."

"It seems to me that television only pick up club games as a last resort such as when they lost the contract for the European Cup. On European weekends they are only too eager to come running to televise us regardless of the relevance of the fixture."

"Earlier this season, S4C televised our game at Cross Keys and Newport at Carmarthen but, important as those games were, neither conjured up anything like the interest that this one has."

" Most weeks Scrum V can barely bring itself to mention the Premier Division or even show a table and I believe that the broadcasting service is doing the Game in Wales a grave injustice for which we might pay in the future."

"It is all very well them over-concentrating on the regions but, as David Moffett has said so often, the Premier League is where the next generation of professionals will come from and they need encouragement too if the Game is to prosper."

The Blacks are predicting the biggest club gate at The Gnoll since Neath was a fully professional club and attracted 6,000 against Leicester in the Heineken Cup.

5 NEATH BOYS TO FACE NZ ?

Forwards - Scott Roberts (Pontypridd), Phil Osborne (Cardiff), Cai Griffiths (Neath), Ross Davies (Newbridge), Rhys James (UWIC), Duane Goodfield (Ponttypridd), Ian Evans (Neath), Alun-Wyn Jones (Swansea), Ben Thomson (Harlequins), Rhys Shellard (Pontypridd), Chris Davies (Bridgend, Johnathan Edwards (Cardiff), Jonathan Mills (Llandovery), Tom Smith (Neath).

Injury and availability news

TEAMSHEET:
The Neath Rugby team to play Newport RFC, at The Gnoll, on Saturday 27th November 2004, with kick off at 2.30pm, will be as follows-

Backs: 15 Gareth Morris (Captain), 14 Aled Brew, 11 Richard Johnston, 12 Wayne Mitchell, 13 Dave Tiueti, 10 James Hook, 9 Patrick Horgan.
Forwards:1 Andrew Howell, 2 Huw Bennett, 3 Cai Griffiths, 4 Steve Martin, 5 Ian Evans, 8 Hywel Jenkins, 6 Andrew Llewellyn, 7 Lee Beach.
Replacements: Neil Clapham, Andrew Littlehales, John McPhail, Paul Jones, Chris Gittins, Tom Smith, Martin Roberts.

Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips:
"We recognise that Newport on Saturday is our biggest match of the season to date, although we always look to view our next match as our biggest. From last years experience we know that they are a well organised team with a lot of quality players. In the wake of their shock defeat to Ebbw Vale, and their deduction of three points, they will be fired up even more to get a result against Neath"

"If last season fixtures are anything to go by, then we can anticipate a real cracker of a match. We also have good quality players throughout our squad, and changes do not effect our performances. There is a lot of competition for places, and everyone in the squad wants to be involved on Saturday"

"We expect Newport to bring a lot of supporters to the Gnoll, and there is no doubt that vocal support can lift players and have an influence on a match. I am sure our supporters will turn out in numbers to help us get this edge this weekend"

BBC Radio Wales Sports Quiz
On Tuesday evening (23rd November), the BBC Radio Wales Sports Quiz, hosted by Owen Money with Frances Donovan and Jason Mohammed, will take place at the Clubhouse with a 7.30pm start. Neath RFC have a team entered and admission is free

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Last season, although we beat Newport soundly at The Gnoll, the Black and Ambers went on to win the title and laid claim to being the best-supported side in the League. Sources at Newport tell me that in ten days time they will be bringing around 1,500 supporters to The Gnoll so that in itself is a challenge to Neath fans.

With Neath top of the League and Newport the reigning champions, I fully expect us to register the largest gate to date in the WPD. With no games for The Ospreys and Dragons, the game ought to attract at least 3,500.

Indeed, as Chairman, I'd issue that target as a challenge to the rugby folk of Neath and ask you regular supporters to help us achieve it by getting your friends, families, lapsed supporters and new ones to come along and make it a day to remember.

I want this game to be the biggest club occasion we've had at The Gnoll since professional Neath played Leicester in the Heineken Cup. We must outnumber Newport on the day - please help !
Geraint Hawkes

Tom Jones Tribute
On the eve of the Newport match, star attraction in the Clubhouse is the Tom Jones Evening. For £15.50, guests can enjoy the carvery and disco.

Neath player scores a try for Wales!

Man of the Match: Steve Martin. (Chosen by Andrew Millard, Ospreys).

The Neath Rugby team to play Caerphilly RFC, at The Gnoll, on Wednesday 17th November 2004, with kick off at 7.15pm, will be as follows: -
15 Neil Clapham 14 Gareth Morris (Captain) 13 Aled Bevan 12 Wayne Mitchell 11 Richard Johnston 10 James Hook 9 Patrick Horgan 1 Andrew Howell 2 Andrew Littlehales 3 Craig Mitchell 4 Steve Martin 5 Chris Gittins 6 Tom Smith 7 Lee Beach 8 Hywel Jenkins
Replacements: 16 Paul Jones 17 Darren Poland 18 Ian Evans 19 Andrew Llewellyn 20 Martin Roberts 21 Nick Jones/ Mike Jones 22 James Davies

Comment from Assistant Coach, Patrick Horgan:
"Caerphilly have more or less the same team that performed well for much of last season, but they have clearly underperformed to date. They have key players in Justin Thomas, Mark Workman and Andrew Williams, so we just hope that they do not decide to pull things together tomorrow evening. Unfortunately, we continued our inconsistent form on Saturday against Ebbw Vale, but again came away with the win. We be looking to improve our performance and maintain our run of results against Caerphilly tomorrow evening"

15 Neil Clapham 14 Gareth Morris (Captain) 13 Mike Jones 12 Wayne Mitchell 11 Richard Johnston 10 Shaun Connor 9 Mark Davies 1 Paul Jones 2 Darren Poland 3 Cai Griffiths 4 Steve Martin 5 Ian Evans 6 Andrew Llewellyn 7 John McPhail 8 Lee Beach
Replacements: 16 Patrick Horgan 17 Dave Tiueti 18 James Hook 19 Andrew Howell 20 Huw Bennett 21 Hywel Jenkins 22 James Davies

Comment from Assistant Coach, Patrick Horgan:
"Ebbw Vale are a stronger outfit than last season, with Byron Haywood doing a fine job as player-coach and Jonathan Hawker bringing stability and direction in midfield. We recognise that whilst we are winning we are only actually playing well for about 30 minutes in each match. We will need to pick this up for the big games we have over the next month or so, starting on Saturday afternoon. Whilst we only ever look at the next match, we are looking to build towards the crucial fixture against Newport at the Gnoll at the end of the month"

Injury news
The ankle ligament injury incurred by Andrew Bishop against Llanharan last week is not as bad as first thought and he will be out of action for approximately three weeks Ben Davies (wrist injury) is out for another two weeks Andrew Howells and Neil Clapham will have late fitness tests ahead of Saturdays match

Neath 46 Llanharan 5
Man of the Match: Centre, Andrew Bishop (chosen by former Neath RFC back row forward, Martyn Morris).

The Neath Rugby team to play Llanharan RFC, at The Gnoll, on Wednesday 3rd November 2004, with kick off at 7.15pm, will be as follows: 15 Gareth Morris (Captain) 14 Aled Brew 13 Andrew Bishop 12 Wayne Mitchell 11 Richard Johnston 10 James Hook 9 Patrick Horgan 1 Paul Jones 2 Andrew Littlehales 3 Andrew Howell 4 Steve Martin 5 Ian Evans 6 Tom Smith 7 Neil Senio 8 Lee Beach Replacements: 16 Martin Roberts 17 Shaun Connor 18 Craig Mitchell 19 Darren Poland 20 Chris Gittins 21 Andrew Llewellyn 22 James Davies

Comment from Assistant Coach, Patrick Horgan:
"Although results suggest that Llanharan have not showed the form that secured promotion last season they will be an extremely well organised and motivated side under their Head Coach Dennis John. You cannot underestimate any side in this league, particularly as they seem likely to feature Cardiff Blues and Wales scrum half Ryan Powell in their starting fifteen on Wednesday evening. We are also mindful that Llanharan recently came close to beating Cross Keys, who provided us with a stern test last weekend. Although we will approach the game in a confident frame of mind we will not take them lightly"

Injury news
Ben Davies (wrist injury) hopes to be fit by mid-November
Adam Matthews has a slight knee injury and will be out of action for about two weeks

Replacements: 16 Martin Roberts 17 Richard Johnston 18 Dave Tiueti 19 Neil Senio 20 Hywel Jenkins 21 Andrew Littlehales 22 Andrew Howell

The match is being televised live on S4C

Comment from Assistant Coach, Patrick Horgan:
"Cross Keys is always a difficult place to go, and conditions tomorrow evening could well suit their forward orientated game. They have an exceptionally strong back row, but I hope the referee will be strong at the breakdown and look to promote attractive rugby. We have had an excellent start to the season and will be looking to maintain our form. We have a strong squad, with power up front and backs who are able to run in tries from all parts of the ground. We will have to adapt our play to suit the weather, but we go into the match in a confident frame of mind. We will not be complacent as Cross Keys will be looking to get a win at their home ground"

Injury news
Patrick Horgan will be out for another week with a fractured cheekbone
Ben Davies (wrist injury) hopes to be fit by mid-November
Steve Martin is out for a week with a slight calf injury

SWAPPING HOOKERS ! - BENNETT IN FOR BLACKS
Neath's Mefin Davies heads for Castres on the replacements' bench for The Ospreys at the weekend but the Blacks have a ready-made deputy for Mefin in Welsh international Huw Bennett who will line up for the Blacks against Pontypool at The Gnoll (2.30pm) instead. This will be Huw's second appearance in the famous All Black shirt as he previously played for Neath in their massive win over Caerphilly in March, 2003. Andrew Littlehales will do bench duty with Darren Poland helping out former club Bonymaen and Adam Matthews continuing his come-back trail for Maesteg Quins.

The Neath Rugby team to play Pontypool RFC, at The Gnoll, on Saturday 23rd October 2004, with kick off at 2.30pm, will be selected from the following 22: -
Backs
Gareth Morris (Captain), Neil Clapham, James Hook, Aled Brew, Richard Johnston, Andrew Bishop, Wayne Mitchell, Mark Davies, Martin Roberts.
Forwards
Paul Jones, Andrew Howell, Cai Griffiths, Darren Poland, Andrew Littlehales, Chris Gittins, Steve Martin, Ian Evans, Hywel Jenkins, Andrew Llewellyn, Lee Beach, Tom Smith, John McPhail.

Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips:
"Looking back at last seasons encounters shows that the last time we played Pontypool they beat us. We had a particularly heavy week last week, with three fixtures, and it is important that we get a win on Saturday if we are to maintain our momentum. We will also be looking to avenge the defeat at the end of last season. From past experience Pontypool will be a well organised side under their Coach Steve Jones, and they will be committed both up front and behind the scrum. I am expecting another tough fixture"

Patrick Horgan will be out for another 2-3 weeks with a fractured cheekbone.

from Welsh rugby league squad member Nathan Strong.

The Neath Rugby team to play Bridgend RFC, at The Gnoll, on Saturday 16th October 2004, with kick off at 2.30pm, will be selected from the following 22: -
Backs

Forwards
Paul Jones Andrew Howell Cai Griffiths Mefin Davies Andrew Littlehales Chris Gittins Steve Martin Ian Evans Hywel Jenkins Andrew Llewellyn Lee Beach Tom Smith John McPhail

Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips:
"We will have to leave the selection of our starting fifteen until after we have performed some late fitness tests as we have carried over a number of injuries from the win at Newbridge on Tuesday evening. Bridgend are always a good side as we found out last year and they have made a positive start to the season. Including the Konica Minolta semi-final we played them three times last season, and each match was a good challenge. They have an experienced pack of forwards and a pacey back line and I am sure they will be looking to stop us making it eight out of eight on Saturday"

Injury news
Patrick Horgan will be out for another 3-4 weeks with a fractured cheekbone Ben Davies (wrist injury) hopes to be fit by mid-November

The Neath Rugby team to play Pontypridd RFC, at Sardis Road on Saturday 9th October 2004, with kick off at 2.30pm, will be as follows: -
15 Gareth Morris (Captain), 14 Aled Brew, 11 Richard Johnston, 12 Wayne Mitchell, 13 Aled Bevan, 10 James Hook, 9 Martin Roberts, 1 Paul Jones, 2 Mefin Davies, 3 Craig Mitchell, 4 Steve Martin, 5 Ian Evans, 8 Hywel Jenkins, 7 Lee Beach, 6 Tom Smith.
Replacements: Neil Clapham, Andrew Bishop, Mark Davies, Andrew Howell, Andrew Littlehales, Chris Gittins, John McPhail.

Comment from Assistant Coach, Patrick Horgan:
"Pontypridd will be smarting after a narrow defeat against Bridgend last weekend. I am sure they will be looking to turn us over and we will have to be on top form if we are to stop them. They will be anticipating a tough game and we must not disappoint them. Although we have had a satisfying start to the season we must guard against complacency after a particularly strong performance against Carmarthen last weekend. We must keep progressing and looking to improve our form into what will be a testing part of the season as we are facing a number of tough away fixtures through to the end of the year"

Replacements: Wayne Mitchell, Martin Roberts, Andrew Howell, Darren Poland, Ian Evans, Lee Beach, Neil Senio.

Comment from Assistant Coach, Patrick Horgan: "It was a sub-standard performance last Saturday at Sardis Road as we struggled to generate the quick ball needed to play the style of rugby we strive for. We scored three great tries when we actually secured some quality possession but for much of the game we were frustrated by Pontypridd. We need officials to clean up this area is we are to play the type of attractive game that supporters want to see. Newbridge will never be an easy place to go, particularly on a wet and windy Tuesday evening and we are expecting another stern test. We will have to raise our performance if we are to get the victory we are after"

Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips:
"Bedwas have on paper not had the best start to the season, but many of their games have been close encounters, especially the Newport game at Bedwas. Like every other club they are a proud outfit, particularly at home, and I am sure they will be looking to make The Bridge Field a fortress. We are expecting a tough game on Saturday. We have made a promising start to the season, and we are pleased with the progress our young squad has made to date. Like all Coaches we are always striving to improve and although we have had some pleasing results to date, particularly against Aberavon, when we eliminate errors in our final passes and unnecessary turnovers we will further improve"

Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips, on last weeks win against Cardiff: "Last Saturdays result against Cardiff was pleasing, particularly as they managed to beat us at the Gnoll last season. It was good to continue the momentum picked up in the win against Swansea, but we appreciate that there is still a long way to go. At Neath we set very high standards and we will continue to strive to reach our goals, but generally it was a good team performance which was reflected in the score" ...and on tomorrows friendly against Aberavon: "Tomorrows fixture will be a good opportunity for both sides to explore the depth of their squads and I am sure that it will be keenly contested, as are all Neath-Aberavon fixtures. It is an opportunity to take a good look at players who have not figured so far this season. With no league fixture for Neath this weekend, it will be a chance for us to build on the momentum we have already gained"
