Further News on Signings
From Newport RFC, Steve Martin (Second Row)
Steve was born in Neath, is 25 years old, stands at 6ft 5in, and weighs 18st. He has re-joined Neath on a two year contract, returning to the club after a season with Newport RFC

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "It is great news to have Steve back at the club. We would have liked to have retained him last season but by the time we approached him he was under contract with Newport. Steve has great experience with Neath as a professional player, and like Brett Sinkinson last year, we expect him to help out with a specialist coaching role. Steve is a Neath man through and through, who will bring an additional element to the team and further strengthen the squad"

>From Neath Athletic RFC, Tom Smith (Back Row)
Tom was born in Bristol, although he has been brought up in the Neath area and his family is originally from Neath. He is 18 years old, stands at 6ft 2in, and weighs 16st. He has joined Neath on a two year contract. He has played for Welsh Youth and FIRA, and was rated most promising forward by the FIRA Wales management
Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Tom is an excellent prospect who has already attracted a huge amount of interest throughout Wales with his outstanding performances for the Wales Under-19 FIRA team. He is clearly one of the top players in his age group, and we will aim to help him fulfil his potential. We have confidence that he will come though and quickly make a mark in senior rugby"

Neath Rugby are pleased to be able to confirm the following 13 signings:
Backs
Gareth Morris - As Captain, Andrew Bishop, Mark Davies, Aled Brew, Nick Jones, Neil Clapham, James Hook, Martin Roberts, Forwards
Ian Evans, Lee Beech, Chris Gittins, Craig Mitchell, Gareth Williams.

A individual profile of most of the signings (together with the other squad members) can be viewed at the following link http://www.neathrfc.co.uk/squadlist.shtml

Comments from the Bench on each signing: -
>From The Ospreys, Gareth Morris (Full Back and Squad Captain for 2004/ 2005 season) Gareth was born in Neath, is 27 years old, stands at 5ft 10in, weighs 14st 7lb, and has joined Neath on a two year contract

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "It is a big boost for Neath to have Gareth back on Board. His high standards are the ones we want all players to emulate. His fitness levels are exceptional, he is an accomplished player, and has huge experience at a high level with Neath and The Ospreys. He is eager for us to continue to be a successful club and his performance and leadership will be a major factor for us in achieving that success"

>From Pontypridd, Ian Evans (Second Row) Ian was born in South Africa, is 20 years old, stands at 6ft 7in, weighs 17st, and has joined Neath on a two year contract. He is a Wales Under-21 international Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Ian is only a youngster, but has already experienced international honours at Under-21 level. He has the physical stature to progress and I have no doubt he will make his mark in the senior game. He possesses all of the required skills and more for his position and we will look to develop him over the next year into a regional player"

>From Pontypridd, Lee Beech (Backrow) Lee was born in Ferndale, is 21 years old, stands at 6ft 2in, weighs 16st 7lbs, and has joined Neath on a two year contract. He is a Wales Under-21 international Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Lee impressed us last season when he was playing for Pontypridd. He played against us on three occasions, in three different back row positions, and on each occasion caused us no end of problems at the breakdown. He has a physical presence, is strong and fit, and I am sure playing for Neath will be a positive learning experience for him. I am sure he will consolidate his position in the senior game, and he clearly has the potential to develop himself into regional rugby with The Ospreys"

>From Bridgend, Andrew Bishop (Wing) Andrew was born in Llantrisant, is 18 years old, stands at 6ft, weighs 14st, and has joined Neath on a two year contract. He is a Wales Under-21 international Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Andrew is a highly rated, and extremely talented player. There is a huge expectation of him to achieve huge success over the next few years, and we expect to see him progress into regional rugby. He has pace, and excellent defence and a sound understanding of the game. He is physically and mentally mature beyond his years"

>From Aberavon, Chris Gittins (Second Row) Chris was born in Neath, is 28 years old, stands at 6ft 4in, and weighs 17st. He has joined Neath on a two year contract Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "With the departure of Mark Jones, we needed someone to add the experience required to help the younger players through match situations. Chris brings great experience, having captained Aberavon for the last two seasons. He is an accomplished second row, who will secure line out ball, and has a good all round technical appreciation. He will also give us the necessary physical presence in the front five"

>From Aberavon, Mark Davies (Scrum Half) Mark was born in Neath, is 24 years old, stands at 5ft 6in, and weighs 12st. He has joined Neath on a two year contract Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "We have been following Marks situation through last year. I was keen to bring Mark back to the Gnoll last season but he was under contract at Aberavon. Even though Mark is still fairly young he has great experience with Neath and Aberavon. He is a player who is comfortable in whatever style of play the game requires and will be a valuable squad member"

>From Neath Athletic, Aled Brew (Wing) Aled was born in Cardiff (and is the brother of Nathan Brew, who plays for The Gwent Dragons), is 18 years old, stands at 6ft, weighs 15st 7lbs, and has joined Neath on a two year contract. He is Wales a Under-19 international Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Aled is one of the rare breed of players who has a physical maturity and stature well beyond his age. He is physically strong, and the type of player who makes an impact with or without the ball. There is huge expectation of Aled and many people are tipping him to surpass his brothers achievements"

>From Tonna, Craig Mitchell (Prop) Craig was born in Neath, is 18 years old, stands at 6ft 1in, weighs 17st 3lbs, and has joined Neath on a two year contract. He is Wales Under-19 international Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "I have been very impressed with Craig. He has a first rate attitude and a will to succeed. He has a strong mental attitude and I am sure he has a big future ahead of him"

>From Narberth, Nick Jones (Wing/ Full back) Nick was born in Swansea, is 24 years old, stands at 6ft, weighs 14st 2lbs, and has joined Neath on a two year contract Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Nick is comfortable at wing or full back and I am sure will prove to be a valuable squad member. He has pace, sound vision and is a devastating player when put into space"

>From Llandovery, Neil Clapham (Outside Half/ Full back) Neil was born in Swansea, is 26 years old, stands at 5ft 10in, weighs 12st, and has joined Neath on a two year contract Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Neil was probably the player who caused Neath the most problems last season while playing for Llandovery. He is a confident player with ball in hand and keeps defences honest with his probing runs. He offers an all round game, being comfortable at outside half and full back. He is also a physically strong player who has a very "Neath" attitude to his rugby"

>From Corus RFC, James Hook (Outside Half) James was born in Neath, is 19 years old, stands at 6ft, weighs 12st 10lb, and has joined Neath on a two year contract Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "James is a youngster who shows a lot of the qualities Matthew Jones showed when he first joined Neath. He is very talented and sharp, whether putting people into space or taking on the opposition in one-on-one situations"

>From Resolven, Martin Roberts (Scrum Half) Martin was born in Aberdare, is 18 years old, stands at 5ft 9in, weighs 12st, and has joined Neath on a two year contract. He is a Wales Under-18 international Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Martin is a young scrum half, who has an exceptionally crisp passing game, also being particularly light and sharp on his feet. He will develop quickly under the guidance of our Assistant Coach, Patrick Horgan. He has proved himself internationally at under-18 level and we are looking forward to helping him transition into the senior game"

>From Whitland, Gareth Williams (Loose Head Prop) Gareth was born in Swansea, is 25 years old, stands at 5ft 10in, and weighs 16st 4lbs. He has joined Neath on a two year contract. Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Gareth was someone who impressed myself when we played Whitland in the Konica Minolta Cup last season. A key attribute in any player that a coach looks for is coachability, and Gareth has that in abundance. He is a player who always gives 100%, whether it is in relation to improving the technical or physical side of his game, and I am sure he will improve significantly as the season progresses"

Comment from Rowland Phillips on his objectives for Neath Rugby over the coming season:
"We have just completed the first month of pre-season training and there is no doubt that we have a significantly stronger squad than last season. Progress towards the initial targets set in terms of physical fitness, physical strength, mental strength and team building are all on track. The squad has a highly competitive attitude, but a strong team ethic is developing as we start to integrate the new faces. Our goals remain to maximise each players individual ability as well as ensuring we maximise the teams potential. Myself and Assistant Coach, Patrick Horgan, enjoyed last season, and it would be easy to be complacent. But there were elements of disappointment as we lost games I felt we shouldn't have. The overall plan is to improve collectively, and ensure we reward players, coaches, backroom staff, Directors and supporters with silverware at the end of the season"

We can confirm the following players have been released:
Mark Jones, Richard Morgan, Chris Anderson, Paul Bamsey, Steve Phillips, Anthony Edwards.

Neath V Caerphilly
Mark Jones has been banned for 10 matches after being cited by Caerphilly in the Welsh Cup Final. The Cheesemen also cited Cai Griffiths but the WRU Disciplinary Committee ruled no case against him.

Cwmtawe Sevens - click here for details
More information will be added later regarding this year's tournament which will be held on Saturday 7th August 2004

NO RELEGATION !
As expected, the WRU have confirmed that there will be no relegation from the Premier Division for 2003/04. But Llanharan will be promoted so there will be an extra fixture on our season tickets for 2004/05 ! Our fixtures are not expected until the end of June.

NEATH TOURISTS
Congratulations to pre-regional All Blacks Shane Williams, Duncan Jones, Steve Jones, Adam Jones and Gareth Llewellyn on their selection for Wales' summer tour to Argentina and South Africa, also to Mefin Davies and Darren Morris (solid Neath men in their time). Peter Sidoli and Huw Bennett played once too so all three hookers have a Neath connection !

WARRIORS OR NOT ?
Confusion surrounds the future of the Celtic Warriors with the WRU claiming to have bought them out but Bridgend's Leighton Samuel denying that the deal is complete. If the Warriors collapse leaving Wales with 4 professional regions, the Premier Division product will presumably benefit from a downflow of regional players making the 17-club Division even stronger and more attractive in 2004/05.

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips, on the importance of the cup to the players and the club:

"The only disappointment this week has been reading about how some individuals feel the importance of the cup has been diminished by it becoming a semi-professional competition. Having played in the cup as an amateur in the 1980's, and as a professional in 2002, I now return to the stadium in a coaching role. People who underestimate the importance of the cup will appreciate that its importance has not been diluted by the formation of regional sides. We go there as passionate as any Neath side who has gone there in the past, and with the same will to win. I understand that ticket sales have gone well, and I am looking forward to a great atmosphere"

and on Caerphilly, our opponents on Saturday:
"Caerphilly, as I have said throughout the season in respect of our league fixtures, have the ability to beat anyone. For quite a number of years they have shown themselves to be Neath's Achilles heel. On that basis we appreciate the huge task that lies ahead of us on Saturday evening. There is no such thing as favourites or underdogs at these occasions, and the teams involved have shown themselves to be the best cup sides in Wales by reaching the final. We will not underestimate our opponents"

Injury and Squad availability news
Adam Matthews (knee) now undergoing an intense rehabilitation programme after a successful operation, but is unlikely to play this season.

The Neath Rugby team to play Pontypridd at The Gnoll, in the Welsh Premier League, on Wednesday 28th April 2004, with kick off at 7.15pm, will be as follows: -
15 Paul Bamsey, 14 Kevin James, 13 Mike Jones, 12 Wayne Mitchell, 11 Richard Carter, 10 Matthew Jones, 9 Owen Gustafson, 8 Ben Davies, 7 John McPhail, 6 Brett Sinkinson, 5 Lyndon Bateman, 4 Mark Jones, 3 Cai Griffiths, 2 Andrew Littlehales, 1 Paul Jones (Captain). 16 Andrew Howell, 17 Alun Wyn Davies, 18 Steve Phillips ,19 Andrew Llewellyn, 20 Richard Morgan, 21 John Leyshon, 22 Chris Anderson.

Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Going on recent results Pontypridd are probably the form team in the league. Their results of late have shown that they have steadily improved and continue to do so. Our game against them in the quarter final of the cup lay testament to their improvement, and they pushed us all the way. They have a highly respected captain in Dale McIntosh, who always leads from the front and is an inspiration to the team. They have a generally young side which has grown in confidence through the season. The squad was disappointed with last weeks performance against Cardiff, but we now have an opportunity to quickly put things right. This being our last home game of the season I hope the supporters take the chance to show their appreciation for a successful first season in the semi professional league, and I am sure their support over the remaining fixtures will spur us on for continued success"

Man of the Match: Ben Davies (pictured left)

The Neath Rugby team to play Cardiff at The Gnoll, in the Welsh Premier League, on Saturday 24th April 2004, with kick off at 5.30pm, will be as follows: -
15 Paul Bamsey, 14 Kevin James, 13 John Leyshon, 12 Wayne Mitchell, 11 Richard Johnston, 10 Chris Anderson, 9 Richard Morgan, 8 Ben Davies, 7 Simon Peters, 6 Brett Sinkinson, 5 Lyndon Bateman, 4 Mark Jones, 3 Andrew Howells, 2 Darren Poland, 1 Paul Jones (Captain). Replacements will be named on the day of the match

Please note that this fixture will now not be televised on S4C, although it will kick off at 5.30pm. The club arranged the match for 5.30pm kick after initial indications that it would be televised. We were informed last Friday that it was not to be televised, but sponsorship and hospitality bookings mean the time could not be changed at late notice. We are grateful to Cardiff RFC for their co-operation in this matter

Comment on Saturdays fixture from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips:
"There can be no slacking off this weekend as if we did that we might find it hard to regain our momentum in time for the cup final. We have never been a club to take our foot off the accelerator and this Saturday will be no different. It is a question now of people putting up their hand and showing they are in form for the final. There are places to be claimed and the whole squad will be hungry to play. I have always respected Cardiff and no matter how the season has gone for either us or them, matches between the clubs are always keenly contested. The league position Cardiff find themselves in and the fact that we are gearing up for a final will have no bearing on how we approach the match. They are representing Cardiff RFC and any team which has Mike Rayer as coach will be a highly motivated and well organised side"

Comment from Rowland Phillips on the upcoming Konica Minolta Cup Final, to be played on May 8th against Caerphilly: "The cup is a competition that Neath have been successful in over the years and I hope this will again be the case on May 8th. I am sure it will be a very physical encounter and a well contested match. We have had a number of closely fought contests against Caerphilly over recent years, and in the semi final against Aberavon they again showed themselves to be a strong and well drilled outfit. Vocal support always inspires the players and the crowd is a vital factor in determining the outcome of any match. Tickets are now on sale and we hope supporters will recognise how important this match is to both the players and the club and that they will turn out in numbers for the final. I am sure Caerphilly will have support not only from their town, but also from the Valleys and Cardiff areas. I am sure it will be an occasion that is worthy of the Stadium"

Injury and Squad availability news
Adam Matthews (knee) and Mark Harvey (shoulder) are now undergoing an intense rehabilitation programme after successful operations, but both are unlikely to play this season. Patrick Horgan is out for another two weeks with a knee injury sustained against Newport, but is targeting a return at the Cup Final.

Now available from the Club Shop (tel. 01639 769662) at £ 12.99 plus postage and packing.

The second volume in the "Images of Sport" series by Mike Price features the tale of Neath rugby from 1945 to 1996, from the return to peace-time rugby in 1945 through to professionalism, and is told with the assistance of relevant photographs, portraits and other memorabilia.

See how the All Blacks became the first post-war Welsh champions, the first to celebrate their centenary, the first to win the Welsh Cup, the first to win the Welsh League in its amateur form and the first to win the League under professionalism.

Read too how Neath took on and came desperately close to beating world champions New Zealand, Australia and South Africa as the "Thomas Revolution" set them on their way to dominance of the Welsh club scene in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

Many of the great names in Neath and Welsh rugby are featured including the club's first British Lions Rees Stephens and Roy John, Courtenay Meredith, Ron Waldron, Brian Thomas, Dai Morris, Elgan Rees, Paul Thorburn, Jonathan Davies, Allan Bateman and Gareth Llewellyn.

Like Volume I Neath RFC 1871-1945 (also available from the Club Shop) it will appeal to anyone with an interest in Neath rugby and the Town itself and will revive many happy memories for the modern rugby supporter.

RUGBY STAR’S DINNER IS A SELL OUT - Press Release - Monday 26 April
An incredible 480 tickets have been snapped up by rugby fans for a charity dinner in honour of former Neath and Wales flanker Dai Morris. It means the sell-out signs have had to go up for the event, organised by the Welsh Charitables, being held in Cardiff Coal Exchange on Friday 7 May.

Other stars who will be sat alongside Morris on the top table, and also be speaking include David Watkins, John Dawes, Dai Parker, Derek Quinnell and Clive Rowlands. The night will end with a presentation from JPR Williams and Max Boyce.

David Power, Secretary of the Welsh Charitables, said: “The response to this charity dinner has been fantastic. The big name speakers meant it was always going to be a sell-out. Rugby fans want to hear Dai Morris speak about his time playing for Wales during the late 60s and early 70s. I am still getting lots of calls for tickets and have had to set up a reserve list. There will be a lot of laughs and more importantly a lot of money raised for our charities.”

The Welsh Charitables have now added the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust to their list of charities who will benefit from the Dinner. The Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust whose Chairman is none other than Sir Tasker Watkins VC are delighted that the Welsh Charitables have decided to add them to the list of supported charities. The others are St Anne's Hospice, St David's Foundation Hospice Care and Ty-Hafan, The Children's Hospice in Wales.

For more information on this and future events call David Power on 07973 705 062.

The Neath Rugby team to play Newport at Rodney Parade in the Welsh Premier Division, on Saturday 10th April 2004, with kick off at 5.30pm, will be as follows:
15 Paul Bamsey, 14 Kevin James, 13 Mike Jones, 12 Wayne Mitchell, 11 Richard Johnston, 10 Matthew Jones, 9 Patrick Horgan, 8 Steve Phillips, 7 Simon Peter,s 6 Brett Sinkinson, 5 Lyndon Bateman, 4 Mark Jones, 3 Andrew Howells, 2 Darren Poland, 1 Paul Jones (Captain).
Replacements: 16 Richard Morgan, 17 John Leyshon, 18 Rowland Phillips, 19 Andy Llewellyn, 20 Andrew Littlehales, 21 Cai Griffiths, 22 Ben Davies/ Tom Davies.

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "We travel to Rodney Parade as clear underdogs. The importance of the game speaks for itself, but we have approached each game individually over recent weeks, looking no further than the next opponents, and this week has been no different. Regardless of the result Newport will still be in the driving seat, purely due to their superior try count. They are an excellent side, which is reflected in their league position. It appears that they may have singled this game out as their league decider, and they will have the whole town behind them on Saturday evening. We have had excellent support all season, at home and away, and I am sure this will again be the case on the weekend"

Injury and Squad availability news
Adam Matthews (knee) and Mark Harvey (shoulder) are now undergoing an intense rehabilitation programme after successful operations, but both are unlikely to play this season. Hywel Jenkins is out for another week with a leg injury.

Top NFL lineman signs for Neath
Neath Rugby has finally tracked down the elusive Tony Gilmore from the USA. Following a few "weekend breaks" scouting in Louisiana, the Neath Coaching Staff managed to sign Tony on their fourth visit to The States. It is hoped that an exchange arrangement can be made during the summer break for most of the Neath squad to attend specialist training at the New Orleans Saints Academy. The Neath Rugby team to play Caerphilly in the Welsh Premier Division, at The Gnoll, on Tuesday 30th March 2004, with kick off at 7.30pm, will be as follows: -

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips "Our recent fixtures seem to be against sides who are also still in the Cup competition, which suggests that we are facing the form sides in the league. Each of these matches also has an added edge as they provide us with an indication of the relative strengths of the squads going into the latter stages of the Cup. Although we still need other sides to help us overcome Newport in the league due to the try differential, last weeks results show that no one can afford to take their foot off the gas, as in this league anyone is capable of beating anyone on their day. We have set our goals for the rest of the season and believe them to be achievable. We must maintain our focus as the season draws to a close"

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips
"Casting our mind back the game at the Brewery Field, it was one of those matches that could have gone either way. Bridgend have a very good work ethic as a team, and we had to fight all the way to get the result on that night. Many will look at this fixture as a dress rehearsal for our semi final at the Millennium Stadium, but we have set our own standards for the remaining games of the season and for as long as there is a chance of us winning the league we will focus only on winning the next league match. Having said that if the game earlier this season is a taster of what to expect, then supporters can expect to see two cracking fixtures between Bridgend and Neath over the next month" Note: Neath won the league match 27-28 at The Brewery Field on 27th October

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips
"The cup this season has shown that peoples passion and interest is as high as ever. It is a competition that Neath, like Ponty, have been successful in over the years. It is also now the only competition where we have control over our own destiny, as in the league we need others to do favours for us in beating Newport. I am sure it will be a very physical encounter as is always the case against Pontypridd. The result in the league game at Sardis Road did not indicate how tough the game was. Home vocal support always inspires the players and the crowd is a vital factor in determining the outcome of any match. We hope the supporters will recognise how important this match is to both the players and the club and turn out in numbers on Saturday afternoon. This is all about securing a semi final at the Millennium Stadium, and prises don't come much bigger than that"
Note: Neath won the league match 25-6 at Sardis Road on 22nd November

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips "Whitland is hard as anywhere to go and play. They are a proud club and like all proud clubs they look after their home venue. They will be up for our visit, there is not doubt about that, and for 80 minutes I'm sure they will eliminate any deficiencies they may normally have. We have not played for a while and that can work both ways. The more experienced player will have benefited from the time off, but the flip side is that it breaks up your continuity. In a one-off situation it's no time to start experimenting. Tried and tested will be the order of the day.''

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips
"It is difficult to know what type of team Llanelli will play tomorrow evening. At the Gnoll earlier this season they put out a team sprinkled with regional players and we were soundly beaten by them. I cannot remember the last time Neath won at Stradey Park, and that gives an indication of how hard I expect it to be. Llanelli have regularly fielded a very young team this season, and I would expect that to pay dividends as the season goes on, and indeed in future seasons. We are looking forward to it, and are expecting the usual warm welcome from the Stradey Park crowd" Note: Llanelli beat Neath 18-21 at the Gnoll on 17th September 2003

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips "When we played Ebbw Vale earlier in the season it marked the end of a poor run of form, and in the end we achieved a fairly comfortable victory. The prospect of playing Ebbw Vale at Eugene Cross Park is a totally different challenge to entertaining them at the Gnoll. They have recruited well over the last month and their team will definitely be stronger than earlier in the season. As I have said in the past, league positions count for nothing in this division and we expect Ebbw Vale to be as difficult to beat as anyone else" Note: Neath beat Ebbw Vale 43-11 at the Gnoll on 25th October 2003

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips
"In the cup game at the Gnoll last weekend we were pleased with our performance and with the result, whilst recognising that Pontypool did not get what they deserved from the game. They were particularly strong at the ruck area and turned over a lot of our ball. Everyone is acutely aware that a game at Pontypool Park will be very different to anywhere else. Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips
"Pontypool are a side with a well drilled forward unit, but they also have a strong direct running game. Their surprising result against Bridgend last weekend gives a false impression of their form as they fielded a much weakened team. I expect them to be at full strength this weekend. I am fortunate to have been involved in quite a few cup competitions with Neath over the years, and you have to respect every team or you will come unstuck. The support from the Gnoll crowd was fantastic last weekend, given that the Ospreys had played the night before at the ground, and those at the match witnessed what was probably our best performance of the season. I hope we get a large crowd again this Saturday and in the weeks to come as we plan to keep playing the same brand of entertaining rugby"

CUP PREVIEW: KONICA-MINOLTA CUP - ROUND FIVE
On Saturday, January 24th, Neath play Pontypool in the Welsh Cup at The Gnoll, kick off 2.30pm.

The sides have met four times previously in the Cup with the series level at 2-2.

Pooler won the first clash at The Gnoll in 1975 12-6 but Neath won in Gwent in the rain in 1987 by 15-9, centre Colin Laity deputising for Paul Thorburn kicking three penalties but the game hinged on a Phil Pugh try converted by Jonathan Davies.

In 1989, Neath defeated Pooler in the semi-final at the Arms Park 20-9 before losing to Llanelli in the final. The last Cup encounter saw Pooler win 15-14 at the Park in 1999.

Pontypool are past winners of the competition, lifting the Cup after that memorable 18-6 win over Swansea in 1983.

This season, the Welsh Cup has new sponsors in Konica-Minolta and the draw ensures that at least six sides from below the Premier Division will make it to the last 16.

* Normal Neath RFC admission charges apply - Stand (£8), Field (£5) with Under-12's free to Field - but, in keeping with normal welsh Cup rules, season-tickets are not valid for this game.

"Shed Head" (not usually known for his spendthrift ways - pictured left) said, " Watching Neath is great - I see the game, buy a programme, have a couple of pints in the club and still have change from a tenner !" Why not join him ? - It's a great afternoon out.

Welsh Charitables RFC Charity Tribute Dinner To Dai "The Shadow" Morris" Friday 7th May 2004 at Cardiff Coal Exchange Following on from the success of the Tribute Dinner for Clive Rowlands back in September 2003 which raised the Magnificent sum of £10,120 It was suggested that we arrange another tribute for the unsung hero of Welsh Rugby the former Neath and Wales back row forward Dai Morris.

The dinner is being held at the Coal Exchange Cardiff on Friday 7th May 2004 and is being supported by a number of Former Internationals. The speakers for the evening are David Watkins, John Lloyd, Mervyn Davies, John Taylor, Clive Rowlands and finishing with Max Boyce so a great night should be had by all please see attached guest list. We are looking for prospective sponsors for the dinner anyone interested details can be obtained from the Secretary David Power.

Tickets for the five course dinner are priced £40 per head £400 per table of ten and are available from the Secretary David Power on 07973 705 062 all monies raised from the evening will go to support our three main charities namely, St Anne's Hospice, St David's Foundation Hospice Care and Ty-Hafan the Children's Hospice in Wales

The Welsh Charitables RFC were a side that use to play together back in the 60's and 70's and was made up of former 1st and 2nd Class players some of whom were former Wales and British Lion Internationals. They use to travel over the Severn Bridge to play games on a Sunday raising money for various charities along the way.

I was asked by a number of people would I consider reforming the Welsh Charitables RFC and continue their good work so I decided to approach 100 people and ask them for a one off payment of £50 to reform the side for which they got Life Vice Presidency and a Special Limited edition tie. When I managed to get former Wales and British Lions fullback JPR Williams to become Patron and former Wales and British Lions Hooker Bobby Windsor to become Chairman it was not long before I attained the 100 that I needed to reform the club. We now have other former Internationals who have joined the club two of whom are tireless workers for the club namely Bryn Meredith (Newport, Wales, British Lions) and Paul Thorburn (Neath and Wales Captain) also former World Powerboat Champion Roger Jenkins helps out with our Annual Charity Golf Tournament and John Harris former Para Olympian is a regular guest at our dinners.

The Welsh Charitables RFC were reformed back on 8th December 2000 and we have our headquarters at the Commodore Hotel Cwmbran, and to date we have raised in excess of £27,000 for our three nominated charities namely St Anne's Hospice, St David's Foundation Hospice Care and Ty-Hafan the Children's Hospice in Wales which we believe are deserved and worthwhile causes. We are looking for new Vice Presidents all the time so if anyone wishes to join us for a one off payment of £60 for which you get a special designed tie and the knowledge that your money will be going to support such worthwhile causes please contact the Secretary David Power on 07973 705 062.

The Neath Rugby team to play Cross Keys RFC, at the Gnoll, on Saturday 17th January 2004, with kick off at 2.30pm, will be as follows:

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips
"When we last played Cross Keys at Pandy Park they had a never-say-die attitude that very nearly won them the match (Neath eventually won 27-31). We were fairly comfortable up until the last 20 minutes, but we ended up holding on by our fingertips. They are a strong all round team who like to play rugby, and they also have a strong goal kicking presence in their full back, Darren Miles. We will not be taking anything for granted on Saturday"

Injury and Squad availability news
Hywel Jenkins has a slight knee injury but will be fit to play against Pontypool next weekend. Adam Matthews will have an operation later this month on the knee injury suffered against Aberavon. Aled Bevan has now started training after breaking his leg in in training earlier in the season. Mark Harvey has had an operation to fix the damage to his shoulder but now faces an extended recovery programme.

The Neath Rugby team to play Newbridge RFC, at the Welfare Ground, on Saturday 10th January 2004, with kick off at 2.30pm, will be as follows: -
15 Adrian Durston, 14 Kevin James (Ex-Neath RFC - returns on permit from Gwent Dragons), 13 John Leyshon, 12 Wayne Mitchell, 11 Richard Johnston, 10 Matthew Jones, 9 Richard Morgan, 8 Rowland Phillips, 7 Steve Tandy, 6 Brett Sinkinson, 5 Lyndon Bateman, 4 Ben Davies, 3 Andrew Howell, 2 Darren Poland (Captain) 1 Cai Griffiths
Replacements: 16 Patrick Horgan 17 Chris Anderson 18 Anthony Edwards 19 Andrew Littlehales 20 Andrew Llewellyn 21 Hywel Jenkins 22 Tom Davies

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips "Newbridge are a very tough team to beat, as they showed earlier this season at the Gnoll (Neath won the match 29-23). Playing at Newbridge with the weather likely to be a bit on the rough side will make it a tough game for both sides, but especially for us as the visitors. The squad has now picked itself up after the huge disappointment of letting last weeks game slip, and we hope to get the show back on the road this weekend. The advantage of this league is that you do not have to wait a long time for an opportunity to put things right"

Kevin James re-signs to Neath RFC
Neath RFC are pleased to confirm the signing of Kevin James Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips "Kevin is a Neath boy who has developed through the Neath Academy structure. It is right that if he is not going to get the opportunity to play regional rugby with a full professional contract, he returns to play his semi-professional rugby at the Gnoll. He adds experience and power to our back division and will be a valuable addition to the squad. Kevin is only 23 years old and I feel we are still to see the best of him, as he will continue to develop as a player. He is aware that future regional opportunities that may arise will be as a result of his form at Neath. We are excited about the prospect of helping him develop"

January 2004 fixtures
Cross Keys visit the Gnoll on Saturday 17th January, with kick off again at 2.30pm. 15 Paul Bamsey, 14 Richard Carter, 13 John Leyshon, 12 Wayne Mitchell, 11 Richard Johnston, 10 Matthew Jones, 9 Patrick Horgan, 8 Hywel Jenkins, 7 John McPhail, 6 Andrew Llewellyn, 5 Lyndon Bateman, 4 Tom Davies, 3 Andrew Howell, 2 Darren Poland, 1 Paul Jones (Captain).
Replacements will be finalised on Saturday

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips
"We have lost only two games this season and drawn one, but Swansea are the only team to have beaten us, even though Llanelli scored more points than we did. They are a strong, dangerous team who always save their best for Neath. We are expecting a game similar to the one at the Gnoll, as Swansea will want to put width on the match. It should give us another exciting and hopefully entertaining local derby. We will have to be at our very best if we are to come away with the result" Neath season ticket holders who have also opted for the full Ospreys membership will gain free entry to the match

Injury and Squad availability news
Adam Matthews is not recovering as well as was first thought from the knee injury suffered against Aberavon, and an operation early in the new year now looks likely. Best Wishes to Brett and Tracey on the birth of their first child - Holly Nia Sinkinson, born on 23rd December (7lbs 8 oz).

The Neath Rugby team to play Llandovery, at Church Bank, on Saturday 27th December 2003, with kick off at 2.30pm, will be as follows: - 15 Paul Bamsey, 14 Richard Carter, 13 John Leyshon, 12 Wayne Mitchell, 11 Richard Johnston, 10 Matthew Jones, 9 Patrick Horgan, 8 Hywel Jenkins, 7 John McPhail, 6 Andrew Llewellyn, 5 Lyndon Bateman, 4 Tom Davies, 3 Andrew Howell, 2 Darren Poland, 1 Paul Jones (Captain), 16 Chris Anderson, 17 Richard Morgan, 18 Cai Griffiths, 19 Andrew Littlehales, 20 Steve Phillips, 21 Brett Sinkinson, 22 Rowland Phillips.

Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips: "Even though we are in a strong position in the league, we recognise that we have stuttered on occasions over the last few fixtures, whereas Llandovery have hit a rich vein of form over the last month or so. Due to this reason, and the fact that we are playing at their home ground, I would rate them as favourites going into the match, even if that may surprise one or two people. It was noticeable last weekend, when we have over 3,000 watching us against Aberavon, that the supporters make a huge difference to the players. I hope the people there last weekend enjoyed the occasion, and will keep following us for the rest of the year"

Injury and Squad availability news
Mark Jones is not available for selection as he is serving a one match suspension due to accumulation of three yellow cards. The Neath Rugby team to play Aberavon, at The Gnoll, on Saturday 20th December 2003, with kick off at 2.30pm, will be as follows: 15 Paul Bamsey, 14 Richard Carter, 13 Mike Jones, 12 John Leyshon, 11 Richard Johnston, 10 Matthew Jone,s 9 Richard Morgan, 8 Hywel Jenkin, 7 John McPhail, 6 Brett Sinkinson, 5 Lyndon Bateman, 4 Mark Jones, 3 Andrew Howell, 2 Darren Poland, 1 Paul Jones (Captain).
Replacements: 16 Chris Anderson, 17 Patrick Horgan, 18 Cai Griffiths, 19 Andrew Littlehales, 20 Ben Davies, 21 Andrew Llewellyn, 22 Tom Davies.

Comment from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips:
"We had a tough game last week (beating Carmarthen 34-17) but it was comforting the way we turned it around in the second half and put together what was overall a strong performance. Our result against Llandovery the week before (won 11-10), was followed by Llandovery beating Aberavon last weekend (Aberavon lost 16-28), showing that there is ability in this division to win matches, irrespective of where you sit in the table. A wounded animal is a dangerous animal, and I am sure that after our success at the Talbot Athletic Ground and their defeat to Llandovery, we are dealing with a very dangerous wounded animal. We are expecting a large crowd this weekend, given the build up and traditional intense rivalry between the sides. I am sure it will be a great occasion on Saturday" In the league fixture at the Talbot Athletic Ground earlier this season Neath won 43-18

Press Release
In respect of the ongoing fallout resulting from the unfortunate comments made by Aberavon's Rugby Director, Chris O'Callaghan, before the Neath-Aberavon match played on Saturday 20th September, the following statement has been issued by Neath RFC Chairman and Chief Executive, Mr Geraint Hawkes:

"We have now heard from the Welsh Rugby Union and it appears Mr O'Callaghan went before a disciplinary hearing in early November. As part of the judgement against him he was reprimanded and instructed to send a written apology to us in respect of his outburst. I can confirm that as of this morning no such apology has been received, and I look forward to receiving it ahead of Saturdays match. If the apology is not forthcoming we will have to consider whether he will be welcome at the Gnoll this weekend, or whether we will have to exclude him from the ground. I would have thought the Union will also be interested to know if the apology is received"

Comment from Geraint Hawkes re Chris O'Callaghan:
"Although we are bitterly disappointed that Chris has not seen fit to apologise to us, we have decided that he will be given access to the ground on Saturday. There is a tremendous tradition of competitive matches between our two clubs, and I hope Saturdays match can live up to the standard of previous encounters. It is time to let the respective teams do the talking on the pitch. It is perhaps fitting that this matter will be brought to a close in my programme notes on Saturday"

Injury and Squad availability news
Adam Matthews is not recovering as well as was first thought from the knee injury suffered against Aberavon, and he will require further treatment. Aled Bevan has broken his leg in training and is continuing his recovery programme, he is expected to be available in January 2004. PARTY TIME AT THE GNOLL
Neath's big "second versus third" game against Carmarthen Quins on Saturday (December 13th) at the Gnoll will kick off at 5.30pm due to television coverage and the Blacks are making it a party affair

The pre-match fun kicks off at 5.00pm with a special goal kicking competition between Neath mascot Brian the Bull, Ozzy the Osprey (pictured left) and Santa himself.

Neath's very own cheerleaders the "Black Angels" will perform their dance routine at halftime and Ospreys squad members will be on hand to sign autographs and have their pictures taken

500 free tickets have been given to the 10 nearest junior schools - Alderman Davies', Gnoll, Gnoll Welsh, Melin, Crynallt, Tonnau, Mynachlog Nedd, Catwg, Blaenhonddan, Bryncoch to come and enjoy the fun

Also invited are Neath Rugby's adopted school Ysgol Hendre and representatives of 25 local rugby clubs

Comment from Neath chairman Geraint Hawkes: "Neath Rugby is reaching out into the community and what better time to celebrate than at Christmas ? This will be the first time for many of our semi-professional players to appear on television and we want a lively atmosphere to show what Neath is made of. It's a real party, a chance for the kids to meet the stars, participate in the entertainment and perhaps get themselves on TV too. We hope as many parents will join in as well - and don't worry if it rains, there is plenty of covered accommodation for everyone"

The Neath Rugby team to play Carmarthen Quins, at The Gnoll, in a televised fixture (S4C) on Saturday 13th December 2003, with kick off at 5.30pm, will be as follows:
15 Paul Bamsey, 14 Richard Carter, 13 Mike Jones, 12 John Leyshon, 11 Richard Johnston, 10 Matthew Jones, 9 Richard Morgan, 8 Hywel Jenkins, 7 John McPhail, 6 Brett Sinkinson, 5 Lyndon Bateman, 4 Mark Jones, 3 Andrew Howell, 2 Darren Poland, 1 Paul Jones (Captain).
16 Chris Anderson, 17 Patrick Horgan, 18 Cai Griffiths, 19 Andrew Littlehales, 20 Ben Davies, 21 Andrew Llewellyn, 22 Tom Davies.
(Pictured is Ray Gravell, S4C TV personality and former Llanelli / Wales Centre).

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips
"Both teams, ourselves and Carmarthen, will have a similar challenge this weekend, that is, to improve on the performance last Saturday. Like at Llandovery, the first match of our season, our fixture against Carmarthen in mid September was a game where the score line flattered our performance (Neath won 31-3). It was a lot closer as a contest than the score would suggest. Carmarthen have had a superb season so far, and have a lot of highly rated players. Their league position and recent results indicate that they are a greatly improved team. It was noticeable last Saturday that the flat performance was matched by a flat atmosphere, in part due to an uncharacteristically low turnout of Neath fans. Like all teams, when you play at home the support can be worth 15 points, and I hope the Gnoll fans will be there in numbers, will get behind us and give us a head start on Saturday evening"

Injury and Squad availability news
Matthew Jones, Patrick Horgan and Paul Jones may ultimately be unavailable as they has been named in the Neath-Swansea Ospreys squad to face Edinburgh at St Helens on Friday night. If they play a substantial part they may not be available for the match on Saturday. Adam Matthews is not recovering as well as was first thought from the knee injury suffered against Aberavon, and he will require further treatment. Aled Bevan has broken his leg in training and is continuing his recovery programme, he is expected to be available in January 2004. Mark Harvey dislocated his shoulder earlier in the season and will be out of action until at least March 2004.

Neath V Aberavon (Saturday 20th December)
In respect of the ongoing fallout resulting from the unfortunate comments made by Aberavon's Rugby Director, Chris O'Callaghan, before the Neath-Aberavon match played on Saturday 20th September, the following statement has been issued by Neath RFC Chairman and Chief Executive, Mr Geraint Hawkes

"I am disappointed that it appears Mr O'Callaghan has yet again not acted in the manner I would expect of someone in his position. I understand that this issue has still not been resolved by the Welsh Rugby Union as Mr O'Callaghan has, we are led to believe, now failed to attend a number of disciplinary hearings. We are disappointed that it appears someone so keen to voice an opinion does not then it appears have the courage to deal with the fallout

Neath face Aberavon at the Gnoll on Saturday 20th December and this matter must be resolved by that date. I appeal to Mr O'Callaghan to make every effort to ensure things are put to bed over the next week or so. If he fails to sort this out I fear he will not enjoy the warm welcome our supporters will give him

We at Neath have taken this matter extremely seriously, and it is a pity Mr O'Callaghan has again not shown the same level of professionalism"

Replacements will be finalised on Saturday due to a number of front row late fitness tests (see below)

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips
"We have already played at Llandovery this season, and although we beat them the score (Neath won the match 41-12) was flattering to Neath. They were often only a pass away from scoring more points and we must not give them opportunities to score on Saturday. They have been strengthened by a number of Scarlet squad players coming into their ranks, and as we have seen over recent weeks, that has a huge benefit to a team. They also have former Neath player Neil Clapham at outside half. He is an exciting player who must rate as one of the best outside half's in the division" Paul Jones (shoulder/ neck) and Andrew Littlehales (foot) both have late fitness tests ahead of Saturdays match. Patrick Horgan will take over as Captain if Paul Jones is unfit

Replacements:
16 Anthony Edwards, 17 Andrew Littlehales, 18 Ben Davies, 19 Rowland Phillips, 20 Andrew Llewellyn, 21 Wayne Mitchell, 22 Richard Morgan.

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips
"We were pleased with last weeks result against Newport, especially in light of the previous weeks poor performance against Bedwas. Good teams are consistent and our performances need to be a lot more consistent. We have seen a poor performance and a very good performance in the space of two weeks. Pontypridd have a history of physical but fair rugby and my experience of playing at Sardis Road tells me that they are normally the toughest games of the season. I do not expect this weekend to be any different. Like Newport found during their unbeaten run you can become targeted as the team to beat. I am now expecting a special effort from most teams to try and topple Neath" Wayne Mitchell has a sternum injury and will have a late fitness test ahead of Saturdays match

Replacements: - 16 Cai Griffiths, 17 Darren Poland, 18 Ben Davies, 19 Rowland Phillips, 20 Andrew Llewellyn, 21 Chris Anderson, 22 Richard Morgan.

Quote from Head Coach, Rowland Phillips, on what promises to be a fine "first against second" placed fixture
"The league table speaks for itself in respect of Newport. If you do not lose games you will be at the top of the league, and to be mid-way through the season, with an unbeaten record, speaks volumes for their quality. It is important for Neath to register a win, because defeat may mean that Newport have secured the league, even at this relatively early stage. They have a very experienced team, and a string of impressive results at home and away this season. Traditionally Neath-Newport games are hotly contested encounters and this will be no different. There is no Ospreys match at the weekend and we are hopeful that we have the traditional high levels of home support at the Gnoll in order to match the many supporters that Newport will bring. It should be a great occasion"

Bedwas are a bit of un unknown quantity to myself, but from recent performances they are clearly a team capable of scoring points, and scoring them quickly.
