Rugby Forum and Meet the Players Evening
A large gathering of Neath Supporters enjoyed a good evening at The Clubhouse - the seventh such event, hosted by Alan Williams, Clubhouse Manager

The players & management invited to the forum were all in attendance:
Lyn Jones; Rowland Phillips; Kevin George; Gareth Llewellyn; Adrian Durston; Hywel Jenkins; Andy Newman; Paul James; Adam Jones; Adam Matthews; John Leyshon; Andrew Jones & Lyndon Bateman. It was interesting to see some "new faces" at The Gnoll

It was also encouraging to hear of the continuing improvements being carried out with repect to The Gnoll, in particular with regard to The Clubhouse and New Family Stand.

Forum questions e-mailed via the Club Office can be viewed on our below

Forum Questions / Answers

Andrew Jenkins:

Are we going to see Steve Jones given a fair crack of the whip at being the first choice hooker this season? I don’t know anyone that rate Barry Williams higher than Steve, yet he always seems to have stand aside when Barry is available.

Lyn Jones:

Steve is 60% fit for the 1st time in his career. He is a multi-talented rugby player but needs to be fitter and stronger. He has worked very hard with Rowland through the summer and has a huge amount of ability. He even started pre-season training before the end of last season.

Our hookers need to be accurate at throwing and a lot of line out work will be carried out.

We lost the title last year against Llanelli and Newport’s at the Gnoll.

Michael Jenkins:

Do you feel buying three players is going to be enough to improve the squad or are you planning to sign more players as well?

Lyn: I believe three players are enough. We have five from the Under 21’s system also coming up and I think this is quite a healthy balance.

Adrian Durston is a big asset to the club.

Hywel Jenkins plays 2nd row as well! He is a top quality player and should be playing for Wales.

He has been in the wrong environment with Llanelli and Swansea and needs to improve his standards.

Andy Newman, also known as "Andrew the faint", he has huge potential recognised by Graham Henry. It was a big move for him to move clubs and country. Andy has a physical and robust presence on the field.

We recruited well and wisely this season. From the Under 21’s Adam Jones, Adam Matthews and Paul James now all have first team contracts.

John Leyshon and Andrew Jones are in the Under 21’s and first team and Lyndon Bateman is being groomed for future success.

Mark Hamer:

What has been the club’s approach to fitness this season? How does it compare to last year’s and what is the percentage improvement year on year?

Also, in view of Gareth’s comments concerning alcohol intake in his regime, what influence has he brought to bear on the rest of the squad about lifestyles?

Lyn J:

The big issue as ever is to keep improving and learning. We now have a new style with more discipline; we thought we were pretty fit.

I am now talking more seriously with Keith Hollifield who is now on a long-term contract, which is quite revolutionary. Levels of fitness have to improve, we are improving but time is running out {too with things we need to be fitter.}

Keith is being given a free hand regarding fitness. The guys have a 3K test on Monday morning to measure their standards. The players have to achieve standards set for them and we keep on getting fitter and fitter year by year.

Gareth L:

I have absolutely no control over the lads on Saturday nights! My wife and three children impair my personal intake. I can’t control the players all the time and they have to leave their hair down occasionally. On paper we have the best squad in Wales and if we can manage alcohol situation it won’t be a problem for us.

Club Office / Clubhouse News
Following the recent refurbishments carried out in The Clubhouse, we would like to inform supporters that the "Club Office" is now situated inside The Clubhouse (towards the rear of the downstairs lounge area).

Many improvements have been carried out with respect to The Clubhouse during the close-season: The former players room is now part of the lounge area. The Club Office is situated at the rear of the lounge area. An additional bar will be available at the rear of the lounge area in order to ease congestion on Matchdays. I understand further work will also be carried out shortly, with respect to "The Bar."

Well worth a visit for those who have not seen the recent improvements. I thought I was in the wrong club following the recent improvements!

New Signings at The Gnoll
Neath RFC are pleased to announce that they have signed the following players: -

ANDY NEWMAN
Andy Newman is a 24 year old lock forward who signs after playing several seasons at Northampton, having played in their European Cup Final winning side. He stands at 6 foot 7 inches, weighs 276 lbs and has played for Wales A

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones, "Andy, just like Hywel and Adrian, has under achieved in his career to date. He is at the critical half way stage if he is to develop into an international second row, and the next few years will be vital for his development. He needs to knuckle down and work hard in our environment. He will give us a physical edge with his bulk, and we are delighted to have secured his services, in spite of strong competition from both Welsh and English clubs"

HYWEL JENKINS
Hywel Jenkins is 26 years old back row forward, who stands at 6 foot 4 inches, weighs 243 lbs, has played for Wales A and joins Neath from Swansea

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones, "Hywel is a hugely talented player who is maturing with age. He will also bring a physical presence and will add to an already strong back row. Everyone recognises Hywel's ability to play at the highest level, and it is our job to help him realise his full potential and achieve his international goals"

ADRIAN DURSTON
Adrian Durston plays at full back, is also 26 years old, stands at 6 foot, weighs 190 lbs, has represented Wales on the tour to Japan, and joins Neath from Bridgend

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones, "Adrian is one of Welsh rugby's enigmas. He is a tremendously talented footballer, but recognised it was time for a fresh challenge after spending many years at Bridgend. Our track record over the years has shown that at Neath we have helped such players achieve their full potential, and we are expecting Adrian to develop and challenge for international recognition during his time at the club"

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones
"Friday nights match against Pontypridd is a fixture we have been looking forward to for a long time. We felt that we had a rough deal in the close run match at Sardis Road in March, and we are determined to put that right on Friday evening. Pontypridd's success in the Parker Pen Shield has made us even more determined to get the result. They have developed an enthusiastic approach to forward play, and we will have to meet and beat them up front if we are to win the match. If we do not keep them on the back foot, they have an extremely dangerous back line that is capable of causing any team problems"

Sinkinson extends contract
Brett Sinkinson has committed himself to Neath RFC by extending his contract for a further year. Brett will now be at the Gnoll until at least the end of the 2004/2005 season

Quote from Director, Mike Cuddy
"Brett was keen to extended his contract for a further year. As a club we have to secure players of his quality on long term contracts if we are going to build a team capable of performing in the European Cup, as well as performing in the Welsh Scottish league. Many sides in Wales and over the border have courted his services, and we are delighted that he is staying at the Gnoll as Brett is performing on top of his game and is clearly the best openside in Wales at the moment"

Under 21s

CARDIFF Under-21’s ….. 15 points NEATH Under-21’s ….. 18 points

Neath Under-21’s set the pace for the seniors when they won the season’s first trophy by beating Cardiff in the final of the Welsh Under-21’s Cup at Bridgend.

It was "here we go again" for older Neath fans as memories were resurrected of the seniors’ classic 1971/72 semi-final between Cardiff and Neath when Martyn Davies’ centenary-celebrating All Blacks famously tamed the immortal Cardiff halves Barry John and Gareth Edwards before going on to beat Llanelli in the first senior Cup Final.

This time, for scrum-half Martyn Davies read hooker Adam Matthews, but the mode of victory was much the same – grinding forward power allied to stern defensive resolution. Oh – and there was a nimble, jinking outside-half too, not Dai Parker but Dylan Pugh who might not yet have the length of kick but can certainly beat a man.

Add to that the presence of a hefty band of Neath followers – probably 90 per cent of the 2000 crowd were Blacks – and history repeated itself. Bridgend seemed ill-prepared for such an invasion and many missed the kick-off but all through the game, the Brewery Field stand reverberated to the chant of "Neath, Neath, Neath" and the Black hordes saw their side deservedly avenge two League defeats by the Blue and Blacks.

The game was every inch as close as the final scoreline suggests and there was little to choose between the two sides. Cardiff had the pacier back division but they got little look in against Neath’s commendable defensive resolution. Cardiff edged the lineouts but Neath had more power at the scrums and the teams were evenly matched in the loose.

Outside-half Dylan Pugh put Neath ahead with a penalty after two minutes when over-exuberant Cardiff were penalised for a high tackle but the Blue and Blacks soon levelled when opposite number Nick Macleod landed a kick awarded for offside.

Neath started stronger and when powerful No.8 Steve Phillips picked up from a scrum in the Cardiff 22, Neath took the ball back to the narrow side and flanker Simon Peters skated over for the opening try.

Referee Paul Adams (Ebbw Vale) did not enjoy one of his most consistent evenings and Cardiff hit back after a spell of attacking when full back Chris Anderson sliced through for a try which Macleod converted.

Neath’s reply was instantaneous and effective as Pugh sliced through in midfield and sent centre Mike Jones careering to the line through two tacklers for Neath’s second try which Pugh converted.

Neath’s 15-10 halftime lead was well-deserved but Cardiff came out stronger in the second-half and got back on terms with a try by winger Elgan Jones. Cardiff were looking good but Neath drove upfield a second penalty by Pugh made it 18-15 as the game entered its final quarter.

In a tense last twenty minutes, both sides vied for the score which might have settled the game but over-eagerness and sound defence held the score in check. The young Blacks threatened the Cardiff line on several occasions but the Blue and Blacks’ lineout held them at bay. As the game went into injury-time, Neath attacked again but Cardiff ran the ball back and it took a last-ditch tackle by Steve Phillips to frustrate Cardiff.

Eventually, referee Adams called time to bring to an end a most exciting tussle well worthy of a final. Neath held onto their lead and another piece of Neath history was made when Adam Matthews stepped up to collect the trophy to more calls of "Neath, Neath, Neath."

First post-war champions, first senior Welsh Cup winners, first Welsh League winners and now first Welsh Under-21’s Cup holders. These young Blacks had a lot of history to live up to and they did it.

Coaches Rowland Phillips, Kevin George and Keith Hollifield as well as team secretary Julie Wicks are to be congratulated on what their young charges have achieved.

Traditional All Black values once again held sway and it was pleasing to see Gareth Llewellyn and virtually the whole of the senior squad as well as the next batch of Under-17’s there to support the Under-21’s.

Neath RFC would like to thank all the fans who made the effort to travel to Bridgend and support the side – let’s keep it going now as the seniors home in on the Welsh/Scottish League !!

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones "Newport are an extremely strong all round side, who will be hungry after not having played for a few weeks. They are obvious favourites for the league title, and are without doubt the most consistent side in the league. We have another tough game on Saturday against Ebbw Vale, and we have to make sure we utilise all of our squad if we are to finish as high as possible in the league"

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones "Glasgow are an excellent side, who play
positive rugby, with an exceptionally strong continuity game. They were a
pleasure to play against when we narrowly beat them last month. Although we
came away with a win in Scotland, and they do not seem to perform as well
away from home, there will be no room for complacency on Saturday. It takes
two teams to produce an entertaining game of rugby, and you can be sure that
when you play the Scottish teams, they are out to improve and play positive
rugby. I do not think the referee will effect the outcome on Saturday, as
if the game is as good as the one in Scotland, even I could ref it"

Squad members extending contracts

Duncan Jones and James Storey have extended their contracts with Neath RFC
for a further two years, both have committed themselves until the end of the
2003/2004 season

Patrick Horgan has extended his contract for a further four years, and will
be at the Gnoll until at least the end of the 2005/ 2006 season

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones "It is great that three key players have shown
their commitment to the club in extending their contracts. At Neath we are
committed to player development and giving individuals a happy environment
in which they can improve their game. All three players have responded to
this environment over the past few seasons, and it is significant that they
have agreed to stay with us at the Gnoll"

Glasgow V Neath (Friday 15th March 2002)
It has just been confirmed that it's a 7.30pm kick at Hughenden. Entrance prices are £10 Adults and £5 for children. See notes on on-line forum, below.

Online Forum - Glasgow V Neath
On Friday 15th March 2002, due to popular demand, we are running an online forum to keep supporters informed during the game. Further details will be e-mailed to Yahoo! Group Members, later in the week. If you are not a member - sign up on the home page.

The Neath team to play Glasgow at Hughenden on Friday 15th March, kick off at 7.30pm will be selected from the following squad: - Gareth Morris, Kevin James, James Storey, Allan Bateman, Dave Tiueti, Lee Jarvis, Andy Moore, Nathan Bonner-Evans, Brett Sinkinson, Richard Francis, Gareth Llewellyn (c), Steve Martin, Andrew Millward, Barry Williams, Duncan Jones, Andrew Howell, Rowland Phillips, Dean Dewdney, Patrick Horgan, Steve Jones, Paul James, Dylan Pugh, Lyndon Bateman.

Neath travel to Scotland on Thursday morning, ahead of the match on Friday
Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones "We delay finalising our team until we can get a look at the weather conditions in Glasgow on Thursday evening/ Friday morning. So far this season we have been to the top and bottom of our game, but on Friday we are up against one of the best teams in the league, particularly at home. It will be difficult to get a result, but not impossible. Whatever happens there is still a lot of league rugby to play after this match, with six more games to go"

On Fridays match in Glasgow, quote from Assistant Coach, Rowland Phillips
"Glasgow have a virtually unbeatable home record and probably one of the worst away records in the league, so we can take nothing from their match against Newport last weekend. The Glasgow side we will face on Friday will be totally different, and we are not going there expecting an easy game. It will be very difficult, they have lots of international experience, and it will be a big boost if we come away with a win" On Neath's away form this season, Rowland Phillips says "Over the last few years we have found it tough to get anything from our travels to Scotland or France, however, this season has been successful with wins in Edinburgh and Bourgoin. We are also beating Welsh sides away, and that is the reason why we are currently in the top four of the league. Our win in the early part of the season at Edinburgh broke the spell, and we now have to win in Glasgow in order to totally dispel it. We have played well up there in the past, and come away with nothing. The Scottish sides complain about our ref's when they come to Wales, and things tend to get evened out when Welsh sides travel to Scotland. What it comes down to is that we will have to comprehensively beat Glasgow if we are going to win"

Injury News
Shane Williams will not travel to Scotland after sustaining a hamstring injury at Pontypridd last Friday evening. He has been sent to London to see a specialist, who seems to have pinpointed the problem, and is giving intensive physiotherapy

Under 21s Match Reports

NEWPORT Under-21’s 23 points NEATH Under-21’s 30 points

Another excellent double was recorded by Neath Under-21’s when they visited Rodney Parade and overcame the Newport youngsters who are coached by ex-Neath coach Darryl Jones.

Playing their third game inside a week, the young All Blacks made it a hat-trick of wins with their forwards once again leading the way. Neath’s superiority was reflected in the try-difference of 5 to 2.

Speedy winger Richard Carter who still has two years left at this age-level crossed twice and there were others came from Dylan Pugh, flanker Steve Tandy (last year’s captain) and a penalty try.

Pugh (who kicked a conversion and a penalty) distributed well from outside-half and continually brought centres Peter Smiriglia and fit-again Mike Jones into play and flanker Ewan Hopkins (son of former Neath & Swansea prop Hywel) and wing Rhodri Thomas showed up well on their League debuts.

Newport replied with 13 points from the boot of Neath College outside-half Michael Hook and with tries by full back Jason Rowles and centre Scott Williams.

Neath remain two points behind Cardiff at the top of the Welsh Premier Under-21’s League. Cardiff’s breakaway match-winning try at The Gnoll last October might well have been the critical moment in the championship-race but the young Blacks are making them fight all the way.

If Cardiff take the League, Neath will be hell-bent on winning the Cup which commences with a quarter-final tie against Swansea at The Gnoll on Wednesday, March 27th (kick off 7.00 pm).

  • Last season’s Under-21’s lock Lyndon Bateman who made a series of telling impressions for Neath Under-21’s has been taken on by the senior All Blacks for the rest of the season. Lyndon’s form at Llandovery this season has been monitored and he will accompany the All Blacks north to Glasgow this weekend.

NEATH U-21’s … 19 points COMBINED SERVICES …. 10 points

Neath Under-21’s brightened up a miserable wet Sunday afternoon with a keenly-fought win over the Combined Services Under-21’s who were paying their first visit to The Gnoll.

The conditions did not make for running rugby but both sides showed a willingness to spread the ball wide and consequently there were many handling mistakes. Neath had a marked advantage in the set-pieces and made it count from two short range lineouts as hooker Lloyd Hayden grabbed two tries both of which full back Shaun Connor converted.

The Services, fielding several South Sea Islanders, looked a useful outfit with ball in hand and they hit back in the second-half with a penalty by outside-half Robert Sweeney.

Again the front row of Paul James, Hayden and Adam Jones gave Neath a sound platform and were well backed up by locks Lee Bassett and Craig Jones. Flankers Daniel Evans and Simon Peters worked overtime alongside new No. 8 Ian McQueen.

Good work by Hayden and and Peters saw Neath respond with an excellent try by lock Craig Jones which made the game safe before Services bagged a try by lock Darrell Ball converted by Sweeney.

The Neath team was :-

Shaun Connor; Ashley Carter, Dean Dewdney, Mike Price, Richard Carter; Dylan Pugh, Gareth James; Paul James, Lloyd Hayden, Adam Jones; Craig Jones, Lee Bassett; Daniel Evans, Ian McQueen, Simon Peters Replacements : Rhodri Thomas, Peter Thomas, Ryan Williams, Mark Jones, Gavin Evans, Tom Davies, Steve Phillips

Referee : Mr. Matthew Aplin (Bryncoch)

NEATH UNDER-21’s … 51 points CAERPHILLY UNDER-21’s …. 17 points

Neath kept alive their Welsh Premier Under-21’s title hopes with an ultimately convincing victory over a plucky Caerphilly side.

In the first-half, Caerphilly belied their bottom placing in the League as they contested every ball and kept the Neath side, showing several changes from their normal line-up, on their toes throughout.

So effective were the visitors in their harrying and ability to pounce on Neath errors that they led 17-14 at halftime thanks to tries by non-stop flanker Geraint Fox and centre Ian Carter who converted both and kicked a penalty.

Out of sorts Neath managed a penalty try, courtesy of their all-powerful scrummage, and a neatly-taken effort by winger Richard Carter. Full back Dylan Pugh converted both, the latter a superb effort from the left touchline

But Neath had wind-advantage in the second-half and, upping their effort, they scored 37 points without reply. Centre Peter Smiriglia restored Neath’s lead with their third try before Pugh kicked a penalty to make it 24-17.

The tries flowed thick and fast as scrum-half Gareth James went over for a quickfire hat-trick. Pugh converted the third and then crossed himself for a superb solo try which was the highlight of the evening.

The lineout work of Gavin Evans earned him the Patrons’ Man-of-the-Match award and, as full-time approached, Neath passed the half-century thanks to the Narberth duo of wing Andrew Jones who got their eighth try converted by outside-half Aled Davies.

The Neath team was :-

Dylan Pugh; Peter Thomas, Peter Smiriglia, Mike Price, Richard Carter; Aled Davies, Gareth James; Marc Jones, Adam Matthews (captain), Adam Jones; Craig Jones, Gavin Evans; Daniel Evans, Tom Davies, Simon Peters Replacements : Andrew Jones, Ryan Williams, Paul James, Lloyd Hayden, Lee Bassett, Darren David, Steve Phillips

Referee : Mr. Peter Soroka (Ystradgynlais)

Quote from Assistant Coach, Rowland Phillips
"Pontypridd have become a difficult side to beat. After under performing in the early part of the season, they are now a well organised and committed outfit. Since the return of Lyn Howells they have developed a strong defence, and we will have to take all opportunities to get points on the board. You have to have respect for any side with players like Mefin Davies, who is playing better than ever. I have a lot of time for their well balanced Centres, with Sonny Parker having exceptional pace, and Jonathan Bryant being a strong ball carrier. We are expecting a tough and extremely close match"

Fixture Blues
Has anybody complained about the number of Neath RFC fixtures that are being changed from a Saturday (usuallly mid day) to a Friday at 7.30. This timing makes it very awkward for supporters who live a distance away. If nobody has complained is there an avenue that is worth following?, I would think that a complaint from a single Neath supporter would be ignored by the WRU. I have no objection to you placing this complaint on the excellent Neath web page

Ebbw Vale 20 Neath 10

The Neath team to play Ebbw Vale at Eugene Cross Park on Saturday 23rd February, kick off at 2.30pm will be selected from the following squad: -

Shaun Connor, Kevin James, James Storey, Allan Bateman, Shane Williams, Lee Jarvis, Patrick Horgan, Nathan Bonner-Evans, Brett Sinkinson, Alfie Mocelutu, Gareth Llewellyn (c), Steve Martin, Andrew Millward, Barry Williams, Duncan Jones, Richard Francis, Andrew Howell, Dave Tiueti, John Slade, Steve Jones, Andy Moore, Adam Jones, Rowland Phillips, Steve Tandy, Dean Dewdney.

Quote from Assistant Coach, Rowland Phillips "It has been great for our players to be recognised in the various Wales Squads in recent weeks. I do not feel it is now such a large step up as our club training and organisation is geared to prepare the boys to play at whatever level they are involved. However, this week we have just been thinking about Saturday as we must be well prepared. Ebbw Vale are a well organised side, with a good rucking game and excellent ball retention. In Gareth Cull they also have a kicking game as good as anyone in the Welsh Scottish league. They have the benefit of home advantage and have improved significantly since we beat them in December. I am sure it will be as tough as any other match we have played this season"

Injury News
There will be late fitness tests for Nathan Bonner Evans on Saturday morning for his ongoing groin injury Andy Moore will also have a late fitness test. The ankle injury he suffered when playing for Wales A against France A last Friday evening is not as serious as it first appeared. He will be fit to play over the next few days, and will play if selected for Wales A against Italy next week Gareth Morris has long standing knee injury and will not play, although he expected to be fit in a week or two

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones
"It was a tough physical match when we won at the Brewery Field in October, and it will be no easier at the Gnoll on Saturday evening. Bridgend have a lot of talented players and are capable of scoring tries from 100 yards out. We have a history of close matches against Bridgend over recent seasons and I am sure it will be another terrific battle. We have selected an initial squad based on expecting fine weather, but final selection will be made on the day. "A" BOUT TIME TOO

Wales ‘A’ have come to their senses at last and heeded Neath’s calls to include All Blacks skipper Gareth Llewellyn in their plans.

Wales’ most-capped forward has been elevated to the Wales ‘A’ squad for next week’s game in Cork against a very experienced Irish side.

Also included are scrum-half Andy Moore who is enjoying a new lease of life after linking with Neath in the summer – yes, we can rebuild them – and prop Andrew Millward, probably the most unsung tight-head in Welsh rugby.

Lee Jarvis is the only Neath back included in the squad of 22 and to keep Neath’s Gang of Four (we’ve had enough of the "Gang of Six") company will be ex-hooker Mefin Davies.

INTERNATIONAL SELECTION FOR GNOLL YOUNGSTERS

The Neath front row of Paul James, skipper Adam Matthews and Adam Jones are included in the Wales Under-21 squad to play Ireland on February 1st. Also called up are centre Mike Jones and outside-half Dylan Pugh.

At FIRA level, Neath outside-half Matthew Jones (who is not yet 18) and Resolfen-reared scrum-half Richard Morgan are included in the Welsh XV to play England at Twickenham..

Press Release
Neath have reacted angrily to Newport supremo Tony Brown's claim in today's "Western Mail" that they should not be in Wales' top six, purely due to the fact that they are WRU owned.

Director and Secretary Mike Price, has issued the following statement:

"Here in Neath we have always had a lot of respect for Tony and what he has done in raising Newport from the dead. However, he has got it wrong on this one and we can certainly do without such fatuous comments. Tony really should know better. The fact is that Neath RFC is funded by the WRU only to the extent of his and every other club in the Premier Division. That is, we get meritocracy money based on our finishing position in the various competitions. Moreover, unlike certain other clubs, we have not had the benefit of subsidy through the WRU placing imported players with us"

"We understand that at least two of the clubs in the so-called Gang of Six are 51% owned by the WRU, which also has substantial interests in the others. As one colleague aptly put it, you can't be "partly independent" or "half a virgin". Besides, we are sure that in his heart of hearts Tony realises that it is to Neath's credit that we are able to achieve as much as we have without the input of a sugar-daddy who could shortly disappear, leaving a club in the lurch. The debate should be about rugby, not about getting more finance for some, at the expense of others. In rugby terms I am confident that we in Neath are doing more for the development of Welsh rugby than most. We should be looking to expand the size and quality of our player base in Wales rather than contract it"

"Neath is a rugby town - who else could attract 1,212 spectators for an Under-21's game, as we did on Wednesday evening against Swansea. We understand that our success is an irritation to the Six. We are the golden buttercup pushing through their cow-pat, if you like, but attacks on other clubs do not benefit anyone, and we feel that Tony would better serve Welsh rugby by talking up the game rather than by sniping at Neath RFC"

Fellow Director Mike Cuddy, says

"As a club we are progressing well both on and off the pitch. It must be remembered that we are and always have been managed locally. Obviously Tony is new to the administration of the game, and he has made big financial mistakes, along with others who entered the game over the last few years. It is fortunate for them that they seem to have the means to make such expensive errors"

The Third Way
In view of some confusion that appears to arisen amongst certain member of the press a statement by Director and Secretary, Mike Price, to clarify the Neath RFC position in respect of "The Third Way" plan "I must initially stress that although we were represented at a meeting held to discus the "The Third Way" plan, our representative was there purely in an observers capacity. The final document does not reflect the collective viewpoint of the Neath RFC Board, however, as a Board we remain receptive to new ideas as to the future structure of Welsh Rugby. Unlike some clubs we feel it is important to listen to views from outside our own little gang, and on that basis we felt that it was appropriate to be represented at the meeting. However, it is important to stress that our attendance does not imply that we fully support, agree or disagree with the final document"

Wales Training Squad
Neath RFC wish to congratulate the seven representatives from the club included in the Wales Training Squad, and in particular uncapped Number 8 Nathan Bonner-Evans. Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones "Nathan Bonner-Evans fully deserves his call up to the national squad. He is without doubt the second best Number 8 in Wales, and has all of the attributes necessary to spend many years as a top class international Number 8"

SEVEN BLACKS IN WALES SQUAD

"Gang of Six left to ponder"

Seven Neath players have been named in Graham Henry’s 36-man squad which will meet up next week for a pre-Six Nations training camp.

Neath’s "Magnificent Seven" is comprised of Shane Williams, Allan Bateman, Lee Jarvis, Duncan Jones, Barry Williams, Brett Sinkinson and Nathan Bonner-Evans.

Shane Williams, Allan Bateman, Barry Williams and Brett Sinkinson are already proven internationals but the elevation of the other three is as welcome as it is deserved.

Two outstanding displays against Swansea and Bristol (both in front of Graham Henry) have spearheaded the consistent Duncan Jones into the No.1 loose-head prop spot with coach Lyn Jones declaring, "Once he’s there, he won’t get out"

Lee Jarvis, well on the way to 300 points since joining the Blacks last summer, is promoted to the senior squad and as Wales’ leading goalkicker cannot be ignored.

The real bonus is the call-up of the as yet uncapped Nathan Bonner-Evans who has made rapid strides in the Neath pack as a bulldozing No.8. Coach Jones says, "Nathan is the second best Welsh No.8 behind Scott Quinnell and he is ready to step up."

Shock omission is Swansea-based former Neath prop Darren Morris but the only downside for Neath fans is the exclusion of one or two other players whose form suggests that they should be there – tight head Andrew Millward and skipper Gareth Llewellyn having played starring roles in Neath’s progress this season.

Nevertheless, seven men out of 36 represents nearly 20% of Henry’s squad. Only Cardiff with 8 have greater representation. Llanelli (6), Swansea (5), Bridgend (3), Newport (3), Pontypridd (1) and Ebbw Vale (1) supply players too.

Neath’s hefty representation should finally give the lie to the "Gang of Six" and their hollow claim.

* Pontypridd’s sole representative is hooker Mefin Davies who left The Gnoll last summer when Barry Williams returned and all at The Gnoll are delighted to see Mefin getting the recognition he deserves at last.

TRAVEL / FIXTURE INFORMATION - VIADANA V NEATH
Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones: "We are travelling to Italy after receiving assurances from the Italian RFU that they will find an alternative venue if the Viadana pitch is unplayable. We have spent most of the week trying to clarify the situation in Italy, and eventually received a reply this morning, having faxed enquiries together with long term weather forecasts to Viadana, the ERC and the WRU. We had agreed to call off the match this morning (Thursday), in agreement with the President of the Viadana club, but ERC intervened to ensure the game was on. We are keen to play the match, but our aim this week has been to ensure that we do not have to put up with a repeat of the Pontypridd debacle. In respect of the match, it is important that we ensure the game is won before we start to think about how many tries we have to score. We plan to assess the situation at half time, and take it from there"

The Neath team to play Viadana (at a ground somewhere in Italy, to be arranged),
in the Parker Pen Shield, on Saturday 12th January, kick off at 2.30pm (1.30GMT), is as follows: - 15 Gareth Morris 14 Kevin James 13 Allan Bateman 12 James Storey 11 Shane Williams 10 Lee Jarvis 9 Patrick Horgan 8 Nathan Bonner-Evans 7 Brett Sinkinson 6 Alfie Mocelutu 5 Gareth Llewellyn (c) 4 Steve Martin 3 Andrew Millward 2 Barry Williams 1 Duncan Jones Replacements: Steve Jones, Shaun Connor, Steve Tandy, Andy Howell, John Slade, Andy Moore, Dave Tiueti

Neath RFC travel to Italy
on the morning of Friday 11th January. The pitch at Viadana has this afternoon been inspected by Neath Officials who travelled in advance of the team and is considered to be unplayable due to the freezing conditions. The Italian RFC/ ERC have to agreed to nominate an alternative ground within the next 24 hours

YOUNG BLACKS TOO STRONG FOR PONTY

NEATH UNDER-21’s ….. 27 points

PONTYPRIDD UNDER-21’s…. 11 points

(Attendance 650)

Neath Under-21’s narrowed the gap behind Cardiff at the top of the Welsh Premier League with a comfortable win over Pontypridd at The Gnoll on Wednesday evening.

After referee Simon Wycherley (Cwmcarn) had disallowed a Neath try at the Town end, play switched to the Llantwit end and Pontypridd took the lead through a try by centre Matthew Nuttall.

Gradually, the Blacks forwards asserted their strength and, after outside-half Peter Smiriglia had nudged them ahead with two penalties, classy centre John Leyshon crossed for Neath’s first try.

Two further Smiriglia penalties pushed Neath further ahead but Treorchy outside-half David Owen kicked a penalty for Ponty to make it 17-8 at halftime.

Ponty started the second-half strongly and Owen dropped a goal from 35 metres but Neath turned the screw with second-half tries by prop Paul James and replacement scrum-half Gareth James.

Tight-head prop Adam Jones was named "Man of the Match" on behalf of another immense display by the Neath front row and lock Lee Bassett also showed up well.

The Neath XV was :-

Dylan Pugh; Lyndon Johnson, Mike Jones, John Leyshon, Richard Carter; Peter Smiriglia, Ryan Williams; Paul James, Adam Matthews (captain), Adam Jones; Gavin Jones, Lee Bassett; Daniel Evans, Steve Phillips, Simon Peters

Replacements :- Peter Thomas, Gareth James, Alex Sheey, Mark Jones, Darren David, Tom Davies

*** Next Wednesday (January 16th, kick off 7.15 pm) Neath entertain close rivals Swansea and a win could take the young All Blacks top.

Neath supporters are urged to lend their encouragement to the youngsters in their quest for the top. Last year’s fixture attracted a crowd of over 1,000 and Neath Under-21’s deserve this level of support

Man of the Match: Brett Sinkinson

The Neath team to play Bristol
at The Gnoll, in the Parker Pen Shield, on Saturday 5th January, kick off at 2.30pm, will be selected from the following squad : - Alfie Mocelutu, Shaun Connor, Nathan Bonner Evans, Andrew Millward, Lee Jarvis, Mike Price/ Dave Tiueti, Kevin James, Andy Moore James Storey Allan Bateman John Slade Paul James Gareth Llewellyn (c) Brett Sinkinson Gareth Morris Steve Jones Barry Williams Patrick Horgan Duncan Jones Shane Williams Steve Martin Richard Francis

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones
"We are expecting Saturdays match to be much more positive than when we played Bristol in October, on a day when conditions made attractive rugby almost impossible. On that day it was a poor match, with neither team stringing much together. There is no doubt that Saturday is do or die in terms of progressing in this competition, it is a huge Challenge and by the end of the match both teams see where they lie in Europe. Bristol's main strengths come from their huge defence, and their world class half backs. We will finalise our team on Saturday morning"

Quote from Assistant Coach, Rowland Phillips
"The match in Bristol could have gone either way, we had chances to win it which we failed to take. They are an extremely well organised side in all areas, particularly defence, but we must score tries if we are to get the result we need. We cannot over focus on our defence, and we have to play to our strengths in attacking them. Hopefully we will have better conditions on Saturday, and we will see a great game of rugby in front of a packed house"

Injury News
There will be late fitness tests for Barry Williams on the sprained ankle he suffered against Swansea. Barry will be given as much time as possible to recover, and is expected to be on the bench on Saturday, with Steve Jones starting the match Dave Tiueti has a groin injury suffered in the match against Caerphilly, and will also have a late fitness test Patrick Horgan has had no ill effects after coming on in the win against Swansea last weekend and is expected to be on the bench on Saturday

Car Parking - Neath V Swansea (29th December)
Neath, Port Talbot council have opened the multistorey car park (situated above the Tesco Store near the Civic Centre) until 8:00pm for the match tomorrow.

Team News
for the Neath v Swansea match at the Gnoll on Saturday December 29th, kick off at 5.30pm Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones "We have so many injuries that I cannot name a squad, let alone a starting fifteen for the match against Swansea. Quite a few players are suffering from a flu-like bug, while others are carrying rugby related injuries. On a positive note I expect Allan Bateman and Shane Williams to be fit to play. We will finalise our team at midday on Saturday after fitness tests are carried out. We are having a roll call at this mornings (Friday) training to assess the likely availability of players"

Quote from Assistant Coach, Rowland Phillips
"I had a feeling before this weeks match that Swansea would beat Llanelli. Swansea are a team with so many quality players that it was only a matter of time before they came good. Against Llanelli it was obvious that they are getting over whatever problems have been stopping them from performing in the early part of the season. I have played alongside Paul Moriarty and Scott Gibbs in rugby league, and I made my international rugby union debut with Tony Clement. One thing is sure, these guys always give 100%, and will expect their team to do the same. It will, as always against Swansea, be a huge game on Saturday"

Injury and Team News
Many minor injuries as noted above, but one piece of good news is that Gareth Morris did not break his hand (as first suspected) against Caerphilly on Wednesday, it is badly bruised and should not keep Gareth out of action for too long.

Replacements: Andrew Millward, Steve Jones, Steve Martin, Richard Francis, Mike Price, Shaun Connor, Aled Thomas

Quote from Assistant Coach, Rowland Phillips
"Caerphilly will be on a high since beating Glasgow. They have always been a tough side, and the match at Virginia Park early in the season was our best league performance to date. They are always competitive, but I expect them to be an even stronger and better organised side with their new coaching staff. Luke Richards plays exciting rugby, and on Saturday he showed that with Mark Ring coaching their backs, he has been given a licence to spread it even wider. They have steadily improved their game as the season has progressed, and the match should provide us with another excellent spectacle"

Injury and Team News
Shane Williams is now back in full training after recovering from his ankle injury. He will not be rushed back into action, and will be given time to get fully match fit.

Patrick Horgan is making big strides towards fitness each day, but will also not be pushed to play until he is 100% fit. He is highly likely to be playing within the next two weeks

25 REASONS WHY NEATH MUST REMAIN

The "Neath Guardian" asked Neath secretary Mike Price to think of 10 reasons why the "Gang of Six" should not be allowed to dump Neath.

He was delighted to oblige …… but quickly came up with 25 !! :-

  1. Five of the 25 players chosen by Graham Henry for the Autumn internationals were Neath players.
  2. Lee Jarvis and Nathan Bonner-Evans played for Wales ‘A’
  3. Neath’s Under-21’s front row was selected en bloc for Wales against New Zealand
  4. Neath were one of only three Welsh clubs to reach the Celtic league play-offs and, with due respect, where were Cardiff, Swansea, Bridgend and Pontypridd ?
  5. Neath are currently the second top Welsh club in the League and are very hopeful

of reaching the quarter-finals of the European Shield

  • Last year we were sixth and Welsh Cup Finalists
  • Financially self-sufficient and not reliant on a "sugar daddy" to prop us up
  • Excellent support-base – the envy of many even in the Six
  • Proven record of development – most consistent Under-21’s side, schools,

College and youth

  • Marketable image – the "Welsh All Blacks" – known throughout world

Historic - Neath RFC :-

  • are the oldest senior Welsh club

12. were first to break the mould and wrestle the championship from the old "Big

Four" – in 1909 the "Western Mail" spoke of us as Wales’ "fifth" club

13. were first winners of the WRU Cup

14. were first to play a European "final" against Beziers in 1972

15. were first to accomplish the treble of championship, Merit Table and WRU

Cup

16. still hold world records for most points and tries in a season

17. were first winners of the WRU National Leagues

18. won the National League more often than any club bar Swansea who sneaked ahead of us last year

19. rarely in the last 100 years has a Welsh XV taken the field with no Neath representation.

20. has produced greats like Rees Stephens, Roy John, Courtenay Meredith, Brian Thomas, Dai Morris, Elgan Rees, Paul Thorburn, Jonathan Davies and Wales’ most-capped forward Gareth Llewellyn

21. the Town has produced top referees like Albert Freethy, Ivor David, Clive Norling, Clayton Thomas – Derek Bevan also played for Neath once !!

  1. three Neath men have been secretary of the WRU – Walter Rees, Eric Evans

and Dennis Gethin who hails from nearby Seven Sisters

  1. three WRU coaches – John Bevan, Ron Waldron, Kevin Bowring owe their

rugby education to the Town

24. Neath have performed better than Wales against World Cup winners New Zealand, South Africa and Australia

25. NEATH ARE SIMPLY THE BEST !

"I could go on – our Under-21’s are two points behind leaders Cardiff in the League, paid workers at other clubs cannot compare with our splendid gang of volunteers, we have exciting plans for The Gnoll, this Website is one of the best etc. etc.

We are progressing very nicely, building for the future at the same time and can do without people continually bleating and destabilising the Game.

In Neath, we have a very special chemistry which produces successful rugby. I cannot believe for one moment that the WRU would go along with these six clubs and write off this area which has served Wales so proudly and should do so for a long time yet.

I don’t think the views of the Six will prevail but we must keep up the pressure. I would urge everyone who cares about Neath rugby to come along to our Christmas games against Caerphilly and Swansea and demonstrate the strength of feeling which exists in the Town."

Mike Price (Secretary)

For further views on why the "Gang of Six" are wrong (including the Brian Thomas view, response from local traders, letters etc.), see the "Neath Guardian"

PANTOMIME SEASON
Neath RFC response to the Gang of Six Blueprint , a statement by Mike Price, Director and Secretary, Neath RFC:

Christmas being the season for pantomimes and tales of fantasy, it seems an appropriate time for the gang of six or Rugby Partnership Wales to launch their dream for the future because their plans have little to offer in terms of rugby reality.

In fairness, their document 'Professionalism and partnership for viable and vibrant rugby in Wales' did highlight some of the problems which afflict the domestic game.

But those problems were hardly a revelation. We at Neath are mindful of them and so, I am sure, are the WRU who, in developing the case of alternative systems, realise themselves that change is inevitable.

However, identifying the ills is the easy part - remedying them is something else. Make no doubt about it - Neath RFC utterly reject RPW's alleged 'cure' and so, I believe will the rest of Welsh rugby.

Basically, the sombre six demand two things: more money and more power. This they believe will lead to them driving the professional game forward - oh, and of course it would perpetuate their existence at the top end of the game.

They say that they offer promotion and relegation - how magnanimous of them. What they do not say is that the initial self-elected clique will be at such and advantage as to render any serious challenge impossible.

RPW would establish a financial and positional monopoly so that even if by some chance a challenger were to win promotion they would not last very long at the top.

Moreover, they would soon be replaced by the original club who would almost certainly rise again under the protection of the 'golden parachute' they propose.

Already we have seen a yo-yo effect with sides coming into the existing premier division (Cross Keys, Aberavon etc) having too much leeway to make up. RPW's proposals would make any advancement nigh on impossible - and they know it.

On the subject of funding RPW demand more for development, more for a 'jobs for the boys' professional management team and more for facilities. Yes, we could all do with that kind of investment but Welsh rugby is not exactly awash with money so we must cut our cloth accordingly.

Neath, Ebbw Vale, Caerphilly and the 230-odd clubs from division one down to division seven do just that. Yes, we have a few overseas players but we operate within strict financial regimes and on the whole we develop and improve local talent.

Neither do we weigh ourselves down with top-heavy and expensive administrative staff or build white-elephant stands which we cannot fill.

RPW's answer to a problem seems to be to throw more cash at it. Successive governments have shown that the road to success is not as simple as that.

Having sailed close to the wind when the professional game first began to bite, we in Neath are only too well aware of the consequences of financial failure. Since then we have received only the monies due to us from the WRU yet we have balanced our books and maintained a highly competitive side. We have not received hidden benefits when it comes to placement of players but we work hard at our task and supply most in terms of value for money.

As the fly in RPW's ointment we fully expect to come in for criticism as the debate intensifies - the fictitious figures quoted by Leighton Samuel elsewhere earlier in the week were probably the start of some disinformation campaign. Our projections indicate that we will balance at the end of the year by which time RPW say that they will be £15 million in debt. The old Neath club's real debt of around £200,000 pales into insignificance beside such a sum which only suggests that the six must be doing something wrong.

Why should the other clubs of the WRU turn themselves over to a gang whose financial recklessness is clearly shown by that staggering debt? If RPW don't get their way, would Welsh players really flow across the border?

If it is laid on the line that their international futures lie on playing in Wales and the WRU were able to offer comparable, central contracts I am sure they would prefer to stay. Central contract would also halt the wage-spiral which threatens all of Welsh rugby.

If it does come down to need for a top six in Wales, we in Neath would strongly argue that we should be in it. Judge us on merit and achievement - by any criteria we would qualify.

However, we believe that the game in Wales needs a bigger and firmer base than that which the sorry six speak of.

Our debate should not be just about the top end of the game. The bottom end is crying out for help and the National League system has created a dog-eat-dog mentality which sees first teams crying off games, second teams obliterated, youth and schools not getting the help they need. The enjoyment factor reduces as the money outflow increases.

If the sad six get their way, there will be such a huge turn-off of support for the game that I genuinely fear it would die.

Already we have cast adrift great areas of rugby development like Pontypool, Aberavon, Maesteg etc.-perhaps 30,000 potential fans there who no longer give rugby much thought.

Do the same to Neath, Ebbw Vale and Caerphilly and another 50,000 potential fans will be lost. And don't forget their children and generations thereafter.

I don't believe the WRU can afford a further switch-off-nor will they.

Rugby legends like David Watkins, Clive Rowlands, Barry John, Phil Bennett, Paul Thorburn, Jonathan Davies, Robert Jones, ex-WRU secretary Ray Williams are all against six. People I talk to at grass-routes are totally opposed to it too.

No matter how many glossy documents PRW produce in a vain attempt to swing public opinion (another example of waste - how much did that cost?). I am sure that the WRU will throw out this self-preservation society plan.

Blackadder played in a losing side at Llanelli last Saturday - remember, Baldrick's cunning plans never bore fruit either!

Neath RFC Lottery Results - Latest Draw (20th December 2001)

The Neath team to play Llanelli
at Stradey Park on Friday 21st December, kick off at 7.05pm will be selected from the following squad: - Gareth Morris, Kevin James, James Storey, Dave Tiueti, Lee Jarvis, Andy Moore, Steve Tandy, Richard Francis, Alfie Mocelutu, Gareth Llewellyn (c), John Slade, Adam Millward, Duncan Jones, Andrew Howell, Steve Jones, Brett Sinkinson, Barry Williams, Paul James, Steve Martin, Shaun Conno,r Allan Bateman, Aled Thomas.

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones "This is a must win game for us, as we have not beaten Llanelli for some time. We must not only go there and win, but do it in a style that wins over the hearts of rugby supporters everywhere. No matter who is selected to play in the Llanelli or Neath teams on Friday evening there will be quality players in all positions, and on both sides. We know we have good enough players to beat them, and its just down to the boys on the field making the right decisions at the right time"

A view from the Boardroom
Quote from Director, Mike Cuddy "Firstly, I need to make something absolutely clear in terms of the so called Big Six, or as I would prefer to call them the Greedy Six. In principle we at Neath do not agree that there is a need to reduce the number of Premier clubs to six, but if the WRU decides that it has to happen, whatever criteria is applied, Neath has to be one of the clubs involved. Be it results on the field, player development, supporter base or financial stability, whatever standard you apply Neath RFC is, by right, one of the top four clubs in Wales. However, we believe that the solution to Welsh Rugby's problems lies not in reducing the number of top clubs, but in terms of how we increase the quality of player base, so that each of the top clubs has a number of international standard and Welsh qualified players. The problems in Welsh Rugby have come from a neglect of grass routes rugby over the last 20 years, where a development structure has been non-existent until the start of last season and the launch of the Under 21's league. Even now, we have only skimmed the surface, as there is still no formal structure between schools and Under 21's rugby. We must not panic, and look closer at this issue before we allow a small number of clubs to destroy our national game"
