New Signings - More Information
Neath RFC are pleased to announce that they have signed the following players: -
Shaun Connor, from Ebbw Vale, on a 3 year contract
Quote from Lyn Jones, Coach, re Shaun Connor "Shaun impressed when he played for Ebbw Vale against us last season. He has some weaknesses in his game, but lots of strengths. He will offer Lee Jarvis strong competition for the number 10 spot at Neath next season. A lesson we have learned from least season is that we must never go into a game without a recognised goal kicker, Shaun and Lee will offer us this stability for many years to come"

Andy Moore, Wales International (4 Caps) and former Cardiff Captain, from Treviso, on a 2 year contract Re Andy Moore, Lyn Jones says, "Andy is again an important signing as he will give Patrick Horgan competition at scrum half. His signing will also give us breathing space to allow Mark Davies time to develop and mature into what is an important position in any side. We do not want to have to have players playing when carrying injuries, as was the case towards the end of last season, and the strength Andy gives us at scrum half will ensure this will not be the case next season"

Press Release
We would like to formally welcome the following players to the Neath squad: -

Allan Bateman - Centre (2 yr contract) Allan returns to Neath from Northampton Saints after a 10 year absence. Born in Maesteg, in his first spell at the Gnoll he scored an incredible 29 tries in 46 games over two seasons. Allan has returned a British Lion, and is a current Welsh International

Barry Williams - Hooker (4 yr contract) Barry rejoins from Bristol, after leaving the club at the end of the 1996/97 season. Born in Carmarthen, in his first 4 years at the Gnoll, Barry scored 15 tries in 95 matches. He also returns to the squad having toured with the British Lions, and is looking to add to his 16 Welsh Caps

Lee Jarvis - Outside Half (2 yr contract) Joining Neath from Pontypridd, being born in Rhydyfelin, Lee is looking to add to his one Welsh cap. His accurate kicking from hand and at goal, strong distribution skills, and eye for the break will strengthen our back line. Lee will challenge for international honours for many years to come

John Slade - Lock (2 yr contract) "Slugger" joins from the Crusaders club in South Africa, having earned 102 caps for Natal and Coastal Sharks (56 Super 12 Caps). John is 1.96m tall, weighs 114 kgs, and will bring an abrasive, workmanlike attitude that will strengthen the squad of forwards

Alfie Mocelutu - Number 8 (3 yr contract) Alfie joins from Caerphilly, and is a Fijian international with 19 caps. He will bring a physical edge to the squad to help the European Campaign. He has had many impressive performances this season, particularly against Neath at the Gnoll

Other Matters:- Gareth Llewellyn
We can confirm that Gareth will Captain the side for the 2001/2002 season. This will mean he has Captained the Club for 6 seasons

Shane Williams

The Neath team
to play Ebbw Vale at the Gnoll on Friday 4th May, kick off at 7.15pm, will be selected from the following squad of 23 :

Nathan Bonner Evans, Kevin James, Paul Jones, Dylan Pugh, Dave Tiueti, Richard Francis, Gareth Morris, Andy Booth, Steve Tandy, Tristan Davies, Shane Williams, Rowland Phillips, Gareth Llewellyn, Steve Martin, Adam Jackson, Andy Howell, Steve Jones, Mefin Davies, Andrew Millward, Duncan Jones, James Storey, Greg Miller, Kati Tuipulotu.

Quote from Team Manager, Phil Pugh "Although there were a lot of positives in our game on Tuesday evening against Bridgend, and we got the result we needed, it was another below par performance. Our forwards were excellent, and conducted themselves well against old style intimidation from the Bridgend pack. We showed restraint in not retaliating and in allowing the officials deal with the matter. Ebbw Vale will come to the Gnoll well motivated by Mike Ruddock, as I am sure they will be keen to finish above Caerphilly. We must win and hope Caerphilly can beat Bridgend over the weekend if we are to have any chance of qualifying for the European Cup next season"

Milestone
Club Captain Gareth Llewellyn plays his 250th game for the Club versus Ebbw Vale, on Friday.

Injury News
Brett Sinkinson has a shoulder injury, which was sustained in our victory at Pontypridd, and aggravated against Edinburgh, but will be fit for selection for the Principality Cup Final. Patrick Horgan has a Knee injury, which was sustained in this week's victory over a rather aggressive Bridgend side, but will be fit for selection for the Principality Cup Final.

Congratulations to young Flanker Steve Tandy who made his home League debut in this weeks victory over Bridgend.

Quote from Neath Backs Coach Kevin George " We struggled to get to grips with the game, We tried to play too much football. A lot of the times things were on but poor execution meant we failed to score. This was an excellant performance especially by the forwards who tyed with the Bridgend scrum."

Departure
Delme Williams has decided to leave the Club for pastures new when his contract expires at the end of the season. Delme has played 77 matches for the Club and scored 31 tries. Team management and all concerned with the Club would like to wish Delme all the best for the future.

Website
The last few weeks have generated a lot of interest in the Club's Website. Three weeks ago the Site had its 100,000th visitor. Which is an average of 500 visitors a week since the site was launched in January 1998, but recently visitors have increased five fold and over the last month the site is averaging 2,500 visitors a week.

The Neath team to play Bridgend
on Tuesday 1st May, kick off at 7.15pm, will be selected from the following squad of 24 :- Adam Jackson Kevin James Paul Jones Dylan Pugh Dave Tiueti Richard Francis Gareth Morris Patrick Horgan Steve Tandy Tristan Davies Shane Williams Roland Phillips Gareth Llewellyn Steve Martin Brett Sinkinson Andy Howell Steve Jones Mefin Davies Andrew Millward Duncan Jones James Storey Kati Tuipulotu Greg Miller Mark Davies

Quote from Coach, Lyn Jones "Everyone in the squad is tired, mentally and physically. We have not put in a good league performance this side of Christmas, and we are keen to put this right tomorrow evening"

Quote from Team Manager, Phil Pugh "After Fridays loss to Edinburgh, all we can now do is win the remaining two games against Bridgend and Ebbw Vale, and hope that other results go in our favour. We have delayed finalising the side to face Bridgend until after training this evening. In respect of our performance in Scotland on Friday, I do not feel we were given a chance to come back into the game. The referee continually picked up on minor offences, and we finished the match with a 26-9 penalty count against us. With the calibre of sides in Wales, and only 2 wins by Welsh sides in Scotland since the league was formed, the facts speak for themselves. There is a strong case for appointing neutral referees for games involving Welsh and Scottish sides"

Outside Half Signs
Neath RFC have confirmed the signing of Pontypridd outside half Lee Jarvis. The 24 year old has signed a two year contract with the Club. The once capped player is the first real prolific points gatherer to play for the Club since Paul Thorburn retired says Alan Williams (NRFC Website). Lee is a player of quality and we look forward to him joining us, but we are concentrating on this season.

Quote from Lyn Jones, Coach "We are pleased to have signed Lee, in the face of tough competition from other clubs. He has made a good rugby decision and will make an excellent addition to our back line. Lee is keen to play for Wales again, and feels that Neath's style of play will further his case for selection. We must now focus our thoughts on Saturdays game against Llanelli and the run in to the end of the season"

In respect of the Mike Peters / Gareth Llewellyn incident
against Bridgend on Sunday Phil Pugh, Neath Team manager says, "We have now had time to review the video of the incident in Sundays game and we do not intend to cite Mike Peters. There was illegal play, but we will not take action as only soft tissue damage resulted from the punch, and it will not keep Gareth Llewellyn out of action. We will leave it to Bridgend to take whatever disciplinary action they consider appropriate"

NO GO
The Club have withdrawn their interest in Wales fullback Matt Cardey.

In Memorium
Former captain and Hooker, Morlais Williams, lost his long fight against Illness this week. Morlais played almost 500 matches for the Club between 1958 and 1967 and was twice a snelling sevens winner and also a championship winner with his only senior Club. Morlais attended home games until the very end and will be sadly missed by all those supporters who knew him.

Whitland Match
View from the Bench - Phil Pugh (Team Manager)

After the Newport victory there was a tremendous high throughout the club, so anything other than a win at Bridgend would be a deep low. But lets not panic there's a lot more right with our game than is wrong, by far. The areas that are weak in our game have been identified and are being addressed by Team Management. There is much emphasis put on the advantages of playing at home and disadvantages of playing away.

In my opinion there is a slight advantage of playing at home for certain teams. But at the end of the day it's a game of rugby and perhaps it's easy to say but a side of quality will win consistently at home or away.

It is nice to see friends old and new visit the Gnoll and today's visitors Whitland have several who come into that category. It's nice to see Dai Jones continuing his rehabilitation after his serious injury. I would like to welcome my former teammate Dai Jacobs alias Dai Half Leg or as some would call him Dai Sex, back to the Gnoll. Dai was a firm favourite with the Neath supporters during his time as a player here. After losing ten players at the end of last season Dai has rebuilt Whitland into a formidable set of opponents. Dai's philosophy is of a fifteen-man game similar to the one we are trying to adopt at Neath at the moment.

Weather permitting, both sides will attempt to play an open and expansive game and I hope everyone enjoys it. On behalf of Team Management and the playing squad may I take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year.

Chris Davies the manager of the local Safeway store is leaving the shop this week. This will be a sad loss to the Club because although Chris Hails from Newport, and is a Pontypridd supporter, he and his staff have been very generous to the Club, not only do the company advertise in the match programme and on the perimeter fence but also supply water and bananas for the team and goody bags to the young players who take part in the pre match curtain raisers. The staff at Safeway's Neath will undoubtedly miss him so will those at the Club who have dealt with him. Chris is at today's match as a guest of the Patron's Association. We hope you enjoy your day and wish you all the best in your future career.

View From The Bench
Phil Pugh Team Manager

What a tough start to the season with three out of the first four matches not only away from home, but against last seasons Welsh /Scottish League winners and runners up. Realistically and points wise I suppose it has been a disappointing start. One win from four games is not championship winning form, but Team Management feel the corner has been turned. All the tipsters gave us no chance against Cardiff on the opening day of the season, but the players did themselves and the Club proud in a match where The Champions were given a real scare before a Neil Jenkins drop goal gave the home side victory in extra time. The performance against Newport was excellent for the first forty minutes, but injuries to key players took their toll on the day. Team Management felt that a win against Pontypridd was far more important than the performance. Although the result in Glasgow was a bitter pill to swallow, there were several factors, which seemed to stack up against us on the day. The Pontypridd match of only three days before was a very physical battle, a lack of discipline during the match; there was also some indifferent Refereeing. Having said that morale is high with the players within the squad, it appears that this squad has an excellent sense of togetherness and Team spirit and a believe in themselves. I would like to welcome our new Tongan International Katilimoni Tiupulotu (better known as Kati) to the squad and compliment him on his try scoring debut. It is also good to see Delme Williams returning to action after his knee injury, if Delme can quickly refind last seasons form he will not be far from the thimking of Wales coach Graham Henry.

New Signing

The Club have just signed a Tongan International back row forward Katilimoni Tuipulou better known as Kati on a two year contract. Kati has 28 Tongan Caps and has recently been playing for Dunvant

Rumours Abound

The rumour season is almost over and the whole of the Neath squad is still intact! Well no players have been sold to say the least. The question is will they be sold? The answer from both the Directors and Shareholders of Gower Park Ltd is a resounding NO!

It seems that the Club's appeal to season ticket holders a few weeks ago has raised sufficient funds to keep the wolf from the door. This is great news for supporters of Wales oldest Club. It would appear that the article that appeared in Wales national daily last week was so wide of the mark that the reporter concerned could be in danger of being selected by Kevin Keegan for England's next World Cup Campaign.

Contrary to opinion the strength of the playing squad has not been depleted, but added to. The return of one of Neath's favourite son's four time Neath Captain Gareth Llewelyn is very popular, Gareth will also lead the team once more. Also returning is another former All Black skipper Patrick Horgan, The audacious scrum half will also cover the outside half position. He will share the scrum half duties with another former Gnoll old boy in Andrew Booth who returns to the black shirt after an absence of ten years.

The outside half position will have yet another new incumbent in the grandfather of soul James Brown, (I feel good about this signing), the young fly half has many admirers in the Welsh game and comes highly recommended. Two new props have been signed in Paul Jones (Merthyr) and Andrew Howell (Dunvant).

The Club's latest signing is that of Fullback Darryl Williams who was capped by Wales on the ill-fated tour to South Africa. Darryl has recently qualified as a dentist and with his namesakes Shane Williams and Delme Williams will make the Neath back three as quick as any in the Welsh/Scottish League and woe betide any team that kicks badly to the Neath back three.

The Board of Directors feel that if is essential that fund raising is a continuous process, and that any future donations will be used to strengthen the current playing squad and ensure that the books are balanced at the end of the season.

To All Our Web site Visitors

Neath Rugby Football Club, the oldest and arguably one of the most successful clubs in the principality are on the drive forward again.

We are playing good, entertaining rugby football and in the forthcoming season our aim is to eliminate those 4 or 5 annoying occasions when we marginally lost games after playing the best rugby. However to achieve this aim requires extra help. We know there are very many exile 'Neath High Achievers' who have deep affection for their old club, and we ask our site visitors to help us tap this resource.

This coming season is of huge importance to the club. We are determined to finish within the top 4 and we have a better chance of achieving this with the aid of all our exile and armchair supporters. We ask those of you who are currently active supporters to get your friends and families out of their passive support role and into the active arena.

Come on you NEATH, NEATH, NEATH supporters, get behind the club.

To do this you can do any or all of the following: -
1. Apply for a season ticket now
2. Get a new person to apply for a season ticket now
3. Offer support through sponsorship or advertising
4. Send a donation and add to those donations already arriving
5. Introduce us to someone who you think might help
